The show this year is different from years in the past. They don't have the lighting around the World Showcase or spotlight the nations, instead a GIGANTIC globe floats out and there is a laser light show on the globe as it turns. Its very interesting and the music is wonderful.
I think the crowds just depend on when you go - it should be dying down some as summer closes. We watched it from the outside patio waiting area at R&C - had a great seat for both ToN parade - which is great - and Illuminations: Reflections of Earth.
There isn't anything scary - the puppets in the parade may be a little intimidation to a small child, but most children we saw loved it.
