Why is it so difficult to find clubs for older guys? In Europe, men continue to wrestle after high school or college in club programs but in the U.S., it is virtually non-existant. I can't find any place in the Southeast U.S. for an older guy to wrestle other than North Fulton wrestling club in Atlanta.
Does anyone know of any instruction available for older guys such as a clinic or camp? I think that is an area where the major wrestling organizations have continued to miss a great opportunity. Develop outlets for us older guys. Look how martial arts studios boomed in the 1970's and 1980's. That wasn't kids...it was adults. Why is USA Wrestling and the AAU not trying to develop clubs and competitions for older guys?
I am in the South and wrestling is making a comeback on the high school level here but the colleges are catching on slower. If anyone has info that would help me find training or a club, let me know. I am in North Alabama. Age 46. Thanks.

North Alabama is not that far from Chattanooga. Contact Coach Gordon Connell, McCallie High School. Gordon is in his middle fifties and wrestled competitively last year. You'll find his e-mail address on McCallie's web page. I think it's: www.mccallie.org

Hey

I'm in the same predictament as you are. How heavy are you?
I've done some research myself and it looks like there are alot more opportunities for us on the West Coast. Let's face it alot of guys our age if they aren't doing the mma/nhb scene they're too busy with a career and raising a family. Other than that our best bet is working out at a local high school as a volunteer coach. Even the tournaments, our matches are no longer 60-90 seconds, not the full 2 minute periods they give the younger guys. What are you looking to achieve other than finding a place to workout at? Until then take care. VC-

Guys,

dont let your age get you down. I'm 33 and won the CT state nutmeg games in 2003 and will be back in 2004.

Wrestling is hands down the best workout you can get, I love this sport and that is why I started this site and the gym. Michigan has many USA wrestling meets for open wrestlers but unless your in michigan than your SOL.

Thank you for taking the time to visit us.

Mike

Hey Mike

Can you tell us what some of the tournaments are that have a 6+ turnout of individuals wanting to wrestle and that doesn't have periods only a minute long?

VC,

Here is the link for the state games for Alabama http://www.alagames.com/wrestling/index.shtml

The National State Games
http://www.stategames.org/

Here is the link showing me the winner of the 2003 open 275
http://www.nutmegstategames.org/content.php?page=wrestlingresults

I wrestle both AAU and USA and most of the time 275 is the biggest weight class with as many as 15-20 wrestlers.

Hope this helps

Mike
