If you aren't whooped by the end of your match with a good oponent, then chances are you weren't wrestling hard enough. As far as conditioning goes, I wouldn't take it too far past two miles (although long distance can be good for fat burning preseason). Think about it, how often are your matches 12 minutes long? Mimic wrestling conditions with 1)hard wrestling and hand fighting 2)hill sprints 3)jumping rope (lots of double-unders). Would also try plyos. I haven't begun a serious plyo program yet, but from the little I've done I can tell you that they're bruisers. Plyos will also help to increase quickness.

Hey B,

I would have to kind of agree with you but I do have a different option on the running. I HATE RUNNING, I do it in the off-season but I hate it, will run hills only if needed now a days. It hurts my knees running for distance and I don’t feel I get the same workout that I would get on a bike or in the water.

Conditioning for a match should be just that training hard for 8-10 mins with kettlebells, bands, bodyweight training. I like to do this after doing hard interval training on a bike or elliptical machine. You want to do exercises that will give your body the feel of a match. If you have not tried kettlebells than your missing out on a true hidden secret for muscle endurance training.

I will post my workout that I used for my last competition this weekend. My 2 matches lasted total 77 seconds.

i used to want to be able to have energy after a match but i came to realize that if you have energy after a match you didn't work hard enough you should be dead tired after every match because you should expend all of your energy what i think you guys want is a quick recovery time between matches you want endurance throughout the whole day of a tournament not just in matches so i would just train as hard as you can everyday and always try to be exhausted after every workout because you will continue to improve your health when you do that

Bailey,

Have you ever watched NASCAR or IRL? You need to wrestle like the drivers and their crews race, SMART. If these guys walked out on the track and just put the hammer down they would either run out of fuel, crash because they are out of control, or burn out the engine.

I have wrestled some of my best matches and walked off feeling like I could go 5 more minutes. You need to think about your energy, listen to how your opponent is breathing and keep the pressure on him. If you’re up in the match then conserve your energy. Then if you get down for some reason you can reach down into your tank and pull it out in the end when you need it.

Yes train hard but also train smart.

First of all I just want to say I love this site, i linked to it through someone on themat.com and I ma putitng it on my favorites list.

As far as training is concerned, in season its 2 miles a day before practice. But sometimes you have to switch it up and keep your body on the edge as far as training is concerned. Throw in a good track workout, 440's, 220's, 100's, steps.

Before the season give yourself a shock treatment too, go run 5 miles and dont stop until your finished.

Thats just me...

Good point but understand that in season conditioning needs to work the anaerobic system. Wrestling is of the most anaerobic sports out there and with that in mind training it should be a major part of your conditioning program. interval training is great. if you are in the south try running hills, up north running in deep snow is also a great workout but watch your temp as you can get sick if you in the cold sweating too much.
