We need some good movies!by jennifer jacksonI'm sorry. I know that this posting is much belated, but I just wanted to get in the discussion about this very fun topic. I also believe that I have it all figured out. One of the most challenging aspects of the novel to film would probably be Coverdale's incessant voyerism and overhearing. It would be difficult to shoot a scene of two characters in dialogue with Coverdale in the near vicinity and be convincing that the other characters were unaware of his presence. Even if the scene could be convincingly contrived, it may warp the subtlety of Coverdale's character. Seeing him as a peeping Tom may force the audience to withhold the little bit of sympathy that Hawthorne entitles him to. Another scene that may be difficult would be all of the mesmeric visuals and the mysticism of the veiled lady. Would Priscilla in a veil be recognizable to the audience? If the veil were really dark, wouldn't it add suspicion and therefore make Priscilla the only logical choice? The drowning scene and the body fishing scene may also be rather morbid on the big screen although it is a crucial insight into the character of Zenobia. OK--Here's my list. Coverdale: Kevin Spacey--he is so plain, yet mysterious. He is charmingly clever, but his countenance conveys no emotion. His voice would be perfect as the narrator of this story. Hollingworth: Jeremy Irons--His chiseled face seems to indicate power and knowledge, yet his lean frame suggests weakness and vulnerability. His eyes seem unexpressionless or forlorn. The aristocratic accent would also add depth to the character. Zenobia: Kate Winslet or Gillian Anderson (un-X-Files-esque)Both of these women are soft, voluptuous, and fair. They have unusually stunning facial features. They are both beautiful and strong. All we would need to do was teach one of them how to act. Priscilla: Natalie Portman--girl from Star Wars--(Princess Bala without the crazy face paint) She is very young and naturally pretty. She is very plain-faced and simplistic. She is also extremely thin, which would indicate her vulnerability and sensitivity. Goto Forum Home |
