Outraged mothers

I feel that Braxton's theory does apply to Harriet Jacobs book through Harriet's description of the sacrifices that she undertook for the sake of her children. I felt that this theory was very evident throughout the book, because of the maternal instincts and ties that were persistent in almost every turn of the page. Harriet Jacobs described her main character (Linda) to be quite dedicated to the well-being of her children and she was always trying to do the best for them. She sacrificed her own health and her safety time and time again to secure her children's safety and overall well-being. She was always putting their needs before her own, and she simply didn't seem to care about the risks that she would invariably place herself in, as long as her children were being taken care of and safe. She lived in a hole practically for years to secure a safe life for her children, one that would not deprive them of the very thing that they needed for their salvation, freedom from slavery. This goes on and on throughout the story, and Harriet Jacobs certainly isn't the only author we've studied who discusses this theme. There was also Fanny Fern, or Ruth Hall, and the many blows to the heart that she had to bear for the sake of her children. She had to undergo so much cruelty (her brother's wrath upon her, the rejection of one newspaper to the next, the failure to secure any kind of position, the ill-fated in-laws and their absolute hypocrisy and temper) for her children. She was always looking to secure some kind of a stable, healthy environment where she could raise her family on her own. She had to deal with her father completely rejecting her existence due to her failure to comply with his notion of how to properly run her life. In general, a mother's heart is always searching for the best for her children and these authors have proven this timelong tale over and over again. There is no limit to the sacrifice a mother would make for her children, and this is something that is carried over no matter what race, or generation we come from.
