What were you thinking? When you consider your leaving all your roots and everything you knew for this complete unknown, how could you expect anything but this vast wasteland?
Naturally, you have no history and no background upon which to draw for material. All you have now is raw material. You have to create your history, your geneology, your culture. Yes, all these things do exist here, but they are completely foreign to you; you do not even understand the language, or, I should say, languages, for America is made up of a huge diverse culture.
So, for now, you will simply have to content yourselves with creating a body of literature. You may draw on your previous existence in England or you may note observations you come upon each day. They will not be the same, and they certainly cannot compete with the Europeans, but they will be original. You may even develop a following. There are many adventurous people in this world besides yourselves, and they will see and appreciate what you are attempting to do.
