To my knowledge, no one has ever made a film of _The Blithedale Romance_. To me, this seems like a grave oversight, not simply because the characters and story are loads of fun, but also because the narrative structure of this novel would seem to lend itself to some very interesting film-making.
Here's your task for the week: first, talk about one or more of the specific formal or structural challenges that a film version of _Blithedale_ might present. How might a director do justice to these textual features in a way that audiences could follow and enjoy? Second (and here's the fun part), what well-known actors would you want to see cast in the roles of Coverdale, Hollingsworth, Zenobia, and/or Priscilla? Keep in mind not only these characters' personalities, but also the narrative functions that each one serves in the novel. |
