Response to Did anybody else get email from Despres today?

FD, I thought you subscribe to the dictum that the content of what someone posts is more important than the identity of the person who posts it. Certainly you have resisted any requests to reveal your own identity. So what does it matter if "Sally O'Reilly" is real or fake?

I agree it is always cause for suspicion when a new login name enters a list and starts critiquing previous posts. I can come up with as many entertaining theories as anyone; for instance I noticed that one of the "Aschwinlike" identities stopped posting here 3 weeks ago when Aschwin de Wolf went to the Netherlands, and "O'Reilly" appeared around the time when Aschwin came back to the USA. But this is just idle speculation, and what does it matter? Either O'Reilly has something worth saying, or (s)he doesn't.

I certainly agree with her observation that this list is an embarrassment, and I regret that our moderator virtually never exercises his powers. In the absence of any intervention, CF is easily dominated by the people who are most unpleasant to others, and their unpleasantness may discourage some people from contributing.

Whether this matters is a separate issue. Certainly it presents cryonics badly, just as CryoNet did, back in the early 1990s. But the invective has been utterly ineffectual, so far as I can see. Alcor and SA remain largely uncommunicative, the principal players are still the same, and SA has acquired more than 50 CI clients despite a period of relentless criticism. Apparently the most hostile people have wasted their time, while discrediting themselves in the process.

Personally I am coming to the end of a 3-week period of relative indolence, and I won't be posting much here after today.

I visited SA last week and at this point I believe that its standby capability is considerably better than that at Alcor, in terms of equipment, number of personnel, and abilities of personnel. Of course this is a judgment call, but some basic facts are undeniable. For instance, SA has affiliated personnel, and necessary equipment, on both coasts at this point, while Alcor seems to have no real resources east of Arizona. If Alcor did have such resources, presumably it would have tried to use them instead of flying Tanya Jones (twice) from Scottsdale to Florida, the first time with a full set of standby equipment.
