A cheap PR stunt could result in the opposite reaction; especially, where claims are being made and the work has not been validated. If you want to ensure you have viable cells, they need to be cultured and stored in N2 rather than LN2. Then a portion of the cultured cells should to be warmed at an independent lab to validate the process.
In my view, it is better to preserve cells from endangered species because it is a moral/ethical thing to do rather than try to attract additional media attention.
