You say "I have wondered often whether a cryonics organization would be able to demonstrate that it sustained harm as a result of remarks on Cold Filter."
Well, why just Cold Filter? This sounds like an agenda from someplace which only shows how Cold Filter is the best discussion forum on Cryonics that there is.
It would, though, be a tad difficult, to prove that an unknown number of prospective cryonics signups decided against, say, Alcor, due to factual remarks made about Alcor on this forum. Well, even nonfactual ones would also be hard to prove as to who decided otherwise because of them. And then you say:
"Truth is an absolute defense against libel in the USA." How true, indeed. Sorry to seem to pick on the biggest target, Alcor, but just for example, you cannot get much more truthful than to point out that while Alcor requires full funding upfront for the average member, they snubbed their noses against average members by extending credit to fund the Ted Williams services. That is an indisputable fact. Also indisputable is that Alcor's Board has yet to publicly admit to its devoted members that it was wrong and will never do such a thing again.
So let me not just pick on Alcor, but to point out that while SA promises much in the way of professional-level services for a standby (the only thing they officially do) team, the components of this team (members) are not mentioned by name on their website, not to mention the latest absence of bios on their employees! This is truth, an absolute defense against libel in the USA. SA of course cannot prove who all decided against their services because of comments on CF, so they would have no basis for libel even if someone accidentally said something about them that was not exactly correct.
May it please the court,
FD
