There are people who believe it possible that God created the initial spark, and then evolution took over. People who believe God created the initial spark, and also continues to shape evolution. I would say that the more scientific minded of these folks tend to be against the "intelligent design movement," which is commonly understood to have a political agenda which would be harmful to science in public schools. So, yes, there is a distinction between those who privately believe in this sort of possibility, and those who believe it should be taught as a scientific theory.
