Hi, me and my partner are moving into the muswell hill area in the next month or so (if the sale goes through) and are expecting our first child in june, one of the things that attracted us to the area was the family feel, is this so? and can anybody recommend any groups or places that a mother and father with newborn should check out!.
There are countless places and things to do in this area for babies and young children. As your baby is due in june I suggest Haringey NCT(National Childbirth Trust) would be a good place to start. You may already be going to their ante-natal classes, if so ask for the contact for this area. If not, contact HQ(available from Directory enquiries) for the local contact. As with many things networking is the best way to go! If you cannot find a contact, e-mail me direct and I will try and get it for you. My children are both teenagers now, so I am a bit out of touch, but I know from experience that they proved an invaluable source of info. and help. Good luck and enjoy living here!
Families required for Channel 4 documentary series

CHANNEL 4 DOCUMENTARY FOR TEENAGERS AND PARENTS: TEEN DIARIES
RDF Television, the BAFTA award winning producers of Faking It, Perfect Match and Shipwrecked are producing a new documentary series for and about teenagers and their parents for Channel 4. RDF also made a very successful series called Living By The Book, where people road-tested various self-help books. Feel free to check out our website at www.rdfmedia.com
This brand new series will give three young people aged 15-17, who would like to enjoy some space away from home, the opportunity of spending three weeks with another family. The young person will select this family based on issues that they may wish to explore at home (for example, communication problems or needing more or less structure to their day to day lives). The idea of the exercise is to give them the chance to reflect and improve on their relationships with their parent(s) having lived under different rules and learned new ways of communicating/ living in a family. Viewers at home will relate to these common issues and it will hopefully open up lots of discussion. It’s not just about issues but also about differences within different family structures.
We’ve spoken to a fun 16 year old girl who lives with in Crouch End who would love to experience a bigger family – she’s an only child with a very liberal mother. She would also love to have a bit more structure and some rules to adhere to. If you would be interested in hearing more about this I would be very grateful if you could call me this week for a chat.
We are also looking for teenagers who think they might benefit from this experience.
I am trying to make contact with any Fortis Green or Muswell Hill Conservation Area Advisory groups or committees who can assist me in trying to resist more unwelcome development (carbuncles?) on one of the Edwardian houses in the Fortis Green Conservation Area.
I do not know whether anyone has responded to your request, however, the Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association may be able to help you. There once was a Conservation Society, but it may well not be active now. Contact John Hajdu 020 8883 8114 for more onfo.
Regards
Dawn Miles
Why has there been no Christmas lights in Muswell Hill this year it looked very dull uninviting and lacking Christmas spirit. The difference things like this make I went to Palmers Green on Saturday and it looked much more inviting and friendly.
Well, there are those tall masts with white 'tinsel' and lights around them.
I can't actually remember if on past years there were any more lights than this Christmas.
Does anyone know the RYAN family that lived in Muswell Hill many years ago. William Joseph Ryan and his wife Jane Marion Ryan (nee Ford). They had 5 children: William, James, Ken, Peggy and Cathy. I am making a family tree and any information would be appreciated.
There are 2 meetings coming up for residents of Muswell Hill. On Nov. 26th, Haringey are holding a listening day at the Baptist church at the top of Dukes Ave for all those concerned about the increasing traffic problems in the area. In the afternoon, 2-6.30 councillors and officials will be there to listen to what your concerns are. In the evening 7.30-9.00, same venue, there will be a presentation and question time involving TFL and the bus companies.
On Dec.13th at St James School Woodside Lane, at 7.30, there will be the Muswell Hill Neighbourhood Assembly, run by Haringey, which has been set up to listen to all concerns of local residents. The main topic on that day will be social services support to carers. there is a soap box platform at the end where you can voice any issues about living in Muswell hill. To put something on the Agenda, ring Caroline Chalkin at Haringey on, 020 8489 5598. Democracy in Haringey may sometimes seem like an alien word, but this platform exists.Whatever your complaint, if you have a gripe, use the system wherever you can!
I POSTED A MESSAGE BACK IN JULY, AND I AM A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED AT THE LACK OF ANY REPLY AT ALL.
I LOVED (LOVE) THIS GIRL, AND MY DREAM WOULD BE TO BE REUNITED WITH HER. ALAS, THERE IS A VERY STRONG CHANCE THAT SHE IS NOW SPOKEN FOR, BUT THERE IS NO HARM IN FINDING OUT.
ANY DISCREET COMMUNICATION AS TO HER FORTUNES WOULD BE WARMLY APPRECIATED.
Thanks for at least replying; not exactly a chat room is it? Jesus, we're talking about an entire north London precinct here, and you're lucky if one contribution a week comes in.
I met Michael when he was living in Fortis Green in the late 70's and I was living in Bristol.I think he was an Architect and today he would be around 55 years old.He was just a very nice man and I would love to make contact again. He has nothing to worry about if he is a happily married man,I am a happy married woman! .
Can anybody recommend a good builder? I need an extension built - a big job - and would be grateful for any information from satisfied customers. Thanks.
I have heard of at least 5 incidents within the last week of a particular con. It usually happens early morning, ring at the door, "I live down the road and need a taxi urgently, the driver will not take a cheque, can I borrow the fare and will pay you back later." Bye-Bye money!
There are positive things afoot(hopefully) for Muswell Hill. Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Muswell Hill and Chair of the Transport Committee for the GLA has been in discussions with Haringey Council and Traffic For London(who funded the Colney Hatch Lane Lights disaster) TFL, to be fair were not told by Haringey of the Grosvenor Rd closure, which piled more misery onto the situation. Generally the whole mess has been caused by Haringeys unwillingness to look at any problem with a holistic approach. The result so far is that Lynne Featherstone has managed to acquire £100 000 from TFL to try and sort the problem out. This may well mean the barrier removed and other more sensible traffic measures introduced. TFL have also agreed to fund a 'Home zone' for Muswell Hill and Alexandra Park in about 4 years time. A home zone is an area where pedestrians and cyclists are given priority, and 20mph speed restrictions apply, plus other traffic measures. Lynne has been quick to qualify all of the above by insisting that proper public consultation will precede any of the above.
Many people will no doubt be against any controls whatsoever, but that is the point of public consultation.
May I point out that I am not a member of the Libdems, but a resident who is sick to the back teeth of Haringeys inability to tackle any problem with any common sense.
If you wish to know more post a message. I will post details of any public meeting on this site.
I feel Security in muswell hill needs to be stepped up I would like to see the use of CCTV cameras covering the area from fotis green road around the Broadway to coneyhatch lane. In the last week the man in royals news agents was attacked and the jewellers opposite had their windows broken. The general safety in this area seems to be getting pretty bad. When I come home from work at 01-30 in the morning there are often groups of yobos hanging around on the corner of Queens avenue often kicking in the windows of the Phone boxes and street drinkers hanging around on corners. As we are unlikely to get the Police station reopened or more Police on the beat the best option I see is to use CCTV around this area. Since the system at wood green was installed there has been a dramatic drop in crime mugging and vandalism of around 40% what do you think.
Over the years, Colney Hatch lane has been hacked away by the actions of various councils: chopping down trees, reducing pavements, concreting over grass and now a further threat to our lane that of removing the final remnants of greenery, paving over the remaining vestiges of grass verges. A once leafy, green Muswell Hill is being slowly deprived of its village charm being turned into a noisier and dangerous place to live.
The latest bus plus proposals will turn Colney Hatch lane into 4 lanes off traffic or possibly 3.5 resulting in great danger to all as cars thunder down the Lane believing the road to be wider than it actually is. When the general transport policy is to narrow roads to calm traffic down, in my stretch of Colney Hatch Lane, it appears to be that of widening the Lane and creating a faster road, which will support a higher volume of traffic.
The reasoning behind these proposals is that the congestion created by the traffic lights, ironically placed to improve the flow of traffic and speed up bus times on the 43 bus route, will be reduced by widening the road. If you stand at the bus stop on Colney Hatch Lane near the traffic lights, it is quite clear why there is so much congestion at the traffic lights. The tail back of cars all want to turn left at the traffic lights!! Yes the decision to block off all the roads linking Colney Hatch Lane and Alexandra Park Road has caused chaos on Colney Hatch Lane. Why some road should be created as safe havens at the expense of other residential streets is beyond me. I would be very interested to find out where the councillors who proposed these measures live… Hence the solution to all the problems must surely be to open up all the roads that have been closed linking Colney Hatch Lane and Alexandra Park Road.
Instead a series of proposals have been forced on a few residents in a very short space of time – less than a month in which to examine the proposals, and make a response. These proposals will not only create chaos for road users on Colney Hatch lane (bearing in mind that the changes imposed on us by the alleged improvements to the 43 bus route resulted in 10 months of mayhem) but also infringe on our basic human rights. Noise pollution already disturbs the sleep of residents living on Colney Hatch Lane especially since the Council closed off roads and erected traffic lights. Are we to be made to suffer more as the traffic will be tearing down the road even closer to our safe havens? Are we to be imprisoned in our homes, unable to open the windows at the front of our house because we cannot bear the noise or the fumes? When we do venture out, it will be almost impossible for mothers with prams or the disabled to walk along the reduced pavements. If we decide to cross the road, the traffic will be even faster and we do so at our own peril. Even more sinister, are these proposals paving the way for CPZ?
If all residents and residents associations do not stand up for our human rights and fight these proposals then it may be your garden they are taking away next…
I agree, it is bad enough as it is. Too much noise, pollution and danger. I can't think why everything is being made in favour of motorists and nothing for pedestrians. Elderly people, mothers with prams or small children, pets and the rest of us risk our lives enough everytime we attemp to cross the road between speeding cars, even walking along the pavement is dangerous as there are often traffic accidents mostly in the bit that connects Muswell Hill Broadway with Colney Hatch Lane or the round about.
Children have been ran over as well as family pets such as cats due to speeding cars. These sort of accidents leave devastation behind and no one seems to be doing anything about the speed limit or possible installation of cameras. They should sort that out first instead of actually just adding to the problems we have already.
... all those daddies with the pushchairs. What do you think they get up to when the mummies are at Ashtanga yoga? The place is awash with men dying to get out their hot buns. And I for one can't get enough of it.
Maybe contact the Muswell Hill 'Pink and Proud' events organiser, Justin Milenarsky who can be found in the phone book. He's always happy to help with anything you need.
Glad to see that these sad gits are still living their empty little lives out in Muswell Hill. Just as bigoted as ever - imagine my surprise at discovering they still (even at the great age of 25) think gay people are hilarious. Joined the National Front yet lads?
I'm a woman, so I have no idea if there's a gay scene in Muswell Hill but there should be one.
I mean, the guy that said: Of course not, this is Muswell Hill!
What did he mean by it? Muswell Hill is full of arty, young and open minded people, there's bound to be plenty of Gay people among them that have their favourite hang outs. Don't give up! Try and find it or start one yourself!
YEAH I KNOW A GAY SCENE. iTS ROUND THE BACK OF B2 EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT. I CHARGE 10 4 A S**K AND 20 FOR A A**E F*C***G!!!! Am Really good. Ask 4 Tottenham fan Muzzer or Woden. HOPE TO C U SOON SWEETIE, XXX
This is slander, some scouse twat is trying to give me disrespect, don't worry though he lives in a ****hole called scouseland so every one should feel sorry for him!
Why has the Shoe shop next door to the Odeon been allowed to change the shop front and put in what looks like the front of a fish tank it looks terrible it don't match the area and as the Odeon is a listed building I don't think this should have been allowed by the council If it was that is.
My wife and I have just moved to Muswell Hill and I wondered if anyone could tell me if there is anywhere on 'the broadway' I can get Orange Pekoe tea and Bath Oliver biscuits... I'd be very grateful if anyone could help. Thanks.
Lovely area!!!
Your best bet would be the shop called called 'Martins' which sells all manner of tasty things including freshly roasted coffee. Situate on Muswell Hill Broadway almost opposite Marks & Spencers. I am sure they would have them.
What a pity that there are people like you out there. I do not know what point you are trying to make but it is a shame that you abuse such an interesting and informative site in this manner.
Mostly people are about being simple, honest and decent without hidden agendas of derisive and sneering content. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.
Thankyou very much for your help Joy. My wife and I found Martins and what a delight!! We spent a wonderful twenty minutes wandering round the little shop and to our delight were able to find exactly what we wanted (as well as much besides!!). Imagine our surprise to discover it was over 100 years old!

- Brian Pilgrim
I went to Alexandra Park from 1972 to 1979 and had Yolanda for two years. I was not aware that she was at Creighton. My brothers Joe and Sam, and sister Cleo where at Crieghton, with Joe starting out at Ally Park. I knew heaps of people at Creighton at the time, would love to stay in touch with anyone who turns up on your contact list.
PS Mr Buckland, the biology teacher has an indentical twin who taugh Biology at our school!
She taught me English from 1979 onwards in Tetherdown annexe of Creighton. I met her years later on Quernmore Road N4 - very laid back teacher and have good memories of her.
I too was at Creighton from about 1976 to 1981 but don't remember her - but you seem to have a pretty good memory for all of the other teachers - I was in Mr Hado's form but I don't recognize any of your class mates
I was at Creighton until 1976 and remember most of the people you listed. Did you ever get any other responses? I'd love to know. I now live in Toronto, Canada.
