human rights and latest bus plus proposals

by

Over the years, Colney Hatch lane has been hacked away by the actions of various councils: chopping down trees, reducing pavements, concreting over grass and now a further threat to our lane that of removing the final remnants of greenery, paving over the remaining vestiges of grass verges. A once leafy, green Muswell Hill is being slowly deprived of its village charm being turned into a noisier and dangerous place to live.

The latest bus plus proposals will turn Colney Hatch lane into 4 lanes off traffic or possibly 3.5 resulting in great danger to all as cars thunder down the Lane believing the road to be wider than it actually is. When the general transport policy is to narrow roads to calm traffic down, in my stretch of Colney Hatch Lane, it appears to be that of widening the Lane and creating a faster road, which will support a higher volume of traffic.

The reasoning behind these proposals is that the congestion created by the traffic lights, ironically placed to improve the flow of traffic and speed up bus times on the 43 bus route, will be reduced by widening the road. If you stand at the bus stop on Colney Hatch Lane near the traffic lights, it is quite clear why there is so much congestion at the traffic lights. The tail back of cars all want to turn left at the traffic lights!! Yes the decision to block off all the roads linking Colney Hatch Lane and Alexandra Park Road has caused chaos on Colney Hatch Lane. Why some road should be created as safe havens at the expense of other residential streets is beyond me. I would be very interested to find out where the councillors who proposed these measures live… Hence the solution to all the problems must surely be to open up all the roads that have been closed linking Colney Hatch Lane and Alexandra Park Road.

Instead a series of proposals have been forced on a few residents in a very short space of time – less than a month in which to examine the proposals, and make a response. These proposals will not only create chaos for road users on Colney Hatch lane (bearing in mind that the changes imposed on us by the alleged improvements to the 43 bus route resulted in 10 months of mayhem) but also infringe on our basic human rights. Noise pollution already disturbs the sleep of residents living on Colney Hatch Lane especially since the Council closed off roads and erected traffic lights. Are we to be made to suffer more as the traffic will be tearing down the road even closer to our safe havens? Are we to be imprisoned in our homes, unable to open the windows at the front of our house because we cannot bear the noise or the fumes? When we do venture out, it will be almost impossible for mothers with prams or the disabled to walk along the reduced pavements. If we decide to cross the road, the traffic will be even faster and we do so at our own peril. Even more sinister, are these proposals paving the way for CPZ?

If all residents and residents associations do not stand up for our human rights and fight these proposals then it may be your garden they are taking away next…

You're right

by Dy

I agree, it is bad enough as it is. Too much noise, pollution and danger. I can't think why everything is being made in favour of motorists and nothing for pedestrians. Elderly people, mothers with prams or small children, pets and the rest of us risk our lives enough everytime we attemp to cross the road between speeding cars, even walking along the pavement is dangerous as there are often traffic accidents mostly in the bit that connects Muswell Hill Broadway with Colney Hatch Lane or the round about.
Children have been ran over as well as family pets such as cats due to speeding cars. These sort of accidents leave devastation behind and no one seems to be doing anything about the speed limit or possible installation of cameras. They should sort that out first instead of actually just adding to the problems we have already.

I'm a woman, so I have no idea if there's a gay scene in Muswell Hill but there should be one.
I mean, the guy that said: Of course not, this is Muswell Hill!
What did he mean by it? Muswell Hill is full of arty, young and open minded people, there's bound to be plenty of Gay people among them that have their favourite hang outs. Don't give up! Try and find it or start one yourself!

Changing Shop Fronts

by Shay Brennan

Why has the Shoe shop next door to the Odeon been allowed to change the shop front and put in what looks like the front of a fish tank it looks terrible it don't match the area and as the Odeon is a listed building I don't think this should have been allowed by the council If it was that is.

Frederick Haldane Smith

by

Looking for information on Frederick Haldane Smith. His father was William Parsons Smith. Ran a shop in Muswell Hill in the early 1900s, perhaps a family run shop.

Doing research for my family tree. Haldane was apparently a family name. Parsons was the maiden name of ancestor further back.

Hoping with middle names that someone may know someone who knows someone ...

Apparently Frederisk had at least 1 brother, William and a couple of sisters.

Any help or clues would be appreciated.

Wasted Forum.....

by Muswell Hill-Billy #987831

What a bunch of miserable people!

I have never seen so much moaning and bickering, except maybe in a teen chat room!

Now don't get me wrong I like a good moan, and I may even be moaning now but if your gonna moan about something then moan, moan, moan...blah, blah, blah!!

Look Muswell Hill is not untouchable, your gonna have crime! And kids growing up are always gonna go through a bit of petty crime, some will, some wont, some will move on to more crime some will leave it behind them(myself, opting for the latter). The point is, you don't live in some enclosed bubble that is 'Muswell Hill' and to be honest it's frightning listening to you all talk as if Muswell Hill is some secret society...It's not a village in Devon, It's not a quaint little town in the middle of nowhere...It's Muswell Hill! A-nice-looking-part-of-the-armpit-town-that-is-LONDON!!

So enjoy it, drink whilst underage, park illegally, hang out with the Scots(Dundee United!!)at B2, laugh in the face of Snobs and just walk into bloody Falconer and say look you cheap bastids, finish the damn shop cos it looks wack!

Ok, that's how you moan! Now I have done my bit to contribute to a completely wasted forum!

Middle class scum

by Woden

It is true that there are a lot of stuck up twats that inhabit Muswell hill, but I have a solution for that. 1 weeks intensive genocide and all who resist can be deported to Crouch End to live with the scum down there. I would also like to say to all those people who believe Muswell Hill is squeaky clean, you're wrong! Within in 5 minutes of a quick phone call I can have any drug of my choice on my doorstep, I can then stroll up the hill and happily Chuff/Snort/Munch away on the drug of my choice every weekend and no one would notice, I know this because its done by hundreds every weekend. Muswell Hill looks lovely but under the surface it's a ****hole, if you could pull yourselves away from your constant striving to have the best hanging baskets on the avenue then you would know that it's time for the working class uprising of Muswell Hill!

Middle Class Scum?

by Local Resident

You sound like an angry young man.

I live in Muswell Hill and don't indulge in drugs and whilst aware such a scene no doubt exists, as it does in every area, no matter if it's Brixton or Mayfair, I feel the side of Muswell Hill that you paint is very one sided and only experienced if one is part of the drug scene. The middle class residents of the area are unlikely to see the murkier aspects, as drug taking is rarely part of their agenda.

If the area is so awful why are you living here? I would imagine you are not tied down by a mortgage or children so could leave for an area of your choosing.

your wrong

by woden

I was not being entirely serious in my previous article, it was tongue in cheek. I was trying to make the point that many folk in muswell hill think they are somehow part of a special community while at the same time their children think and act like they are rudeboys from Wood Green. I have no problem with this but I do find it funny that the Muswell Hill wives are totally oblivious to their kids lifestyles. Also, there isn't an underground drugs scene in the area, it's overground and, rightly, accepted by most people. Most of the drug-taking is down by the posh-boys. Lastly, I don't know how much you earn but there is no way I could ever afford to move anywhere within a 100 mile radius of London.

BBC LOOKING FOR MUSWELL HILL COUPLES!

by

BBC2 DOCUMENTARY SERIES

I'm making a documentary series for BBC2 about marriage and long-term relationships.

The idea is to paint a portrait of relationships in modern Britain, by making a diary of four couples' experiences during the next 6-9 months.

I'm looking for couples who either have a new, changing or challenging experience ahead of them (such as a first child;a stepfamily coming together; a couple relocating...), or couples who have very busy, demanding lives (kids, work etc...). Above all I'm looking for articulate, honest and self-reflective people who are interested in the idea of the project.

At this stage, I'm just chatting to people informally - so there's no commitment at all. If you'd like to know more, please contact me...on 0207 313 6836, or david.wise@rdfmedia.com

Many thanks

But when you ask for 'articulate, honest and self-reflective people' I really don't think you'll have much luck as Muswell Hill is renound for only housing loud braying idiots with no common sense at all. Ho-hum, I'm sure you'll get lots of replies though, it'd be a great talking point for them at their group therapy meetings.

its free no catch...Im only going to do this for a few months and then I am going to change the entire content of the site.
