LIST OF NEW YORK CITY (NYC) ATTRACTIONS & OTHER USEFUL INFO
(* N=North, S=South, Ave=Avenue, St=Street, E=east, W=West, M-F=Monday through Friday)

" WHY IS NYC CALLED THE BIG APPLE?"
In the 1920s, Morning Telegraph's sports writer (John Fitzgerald) overheard stablehands in New Orleans refer to NYC's racetracks as "the Big Apple." Thus he named his column "Around the Big Apple." A decade later, jazz musicians refer to New York City the same, and especially Harlem, as the jazz capital of the world. The saying was that "there are many apples on the trees of success but when you pick New York City, you pick the big apple."

NYC HISTORY (SHORT VERSION)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
X- In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian serving French King, arrived in New York Harbor.
X- In 1609 Henry Hudson , an Englishman serving Dutch E India Company, lands in Manhattan.

X- With US's entry into WWI in 1917, New York benefited from wartime trade and commerce.
X- 1920s saw Prohibition law dominating the NYC that was passed in 1920 (lived until 1933)

X- Depression era also sees 3 of NY's most / opulent & beautiful - skyscrapers were built
---(the Chrysler Building in 1930, the Empire State in 1931 and in 1932 Rockefeller Center)
X- US' entry into WWII in 1941 had little direct impact on New York City:
X- The Manhattan Project (secretly in Columbia University) split's the uranium atom.
