Pedestrians and controller modifications...

I have 2 questions:

First, I'm using a hand-held steering wheel to play, which the computer sets up as a 2-axis, 4-button joystick. Is there any way to assign some of the controls to the joystick buttons and some to the keyboard? I have the 4 buttons assigned as e-brake, burnout, look back, and drop camera, but i can't use the other views (left and right), the "toggle view" feature, or the horn.

Second, since my system is only marginally powerful enough to run Driver (P233/96mb RAM/4MB 3d card), it helps me to turn ALL the detail levels down to nothing, which is ok by me. The problem is this: When in Undercover mode, the "Bust Out JeanPaul" mission turns up the number of pedestrians so that my system slows WAY down and the game is practically unplayable. Is ther a way to turn off the Pedestrians in an undercover mission?
