2005 MUSTANG FUEL TANK PROBLEM

by

The last four times, the only four times, I have tried to fill my fuel tank, the hose nozzle triggers prematurely, thinking the tank is full. It is really bad at the beginning when you try to open the fuel nozzle full throttle and try to lock the trigger in place. You no sooner get started, it clicks off. Once it does it, it is next impossible to fill the tank unless you barely pull the trigger and cause the gas flow to be almost a trickle. Takes forever, but at least you get fuel.

I noticed today that as I reached what I thought was a full tank, meaning gas was visibly bubbling over the fuel hole, I stopped filling the tank. What I noticed was that even though fuel was visible to the top of the fuel neck, my gauge was about 2 to 3 gallons from completely full, and no, it didn't finally reach completely full at any time during my 20 mile trip home. So, I think this fuel tank issue has an adverse affect on the fuel gauge.

The service manager at the dealership told me this was not a unique problem, that some system he looks at for documented problems has several documented cases where people have voiced their concern about this. The fix is a new gas tank. Mine is on back order. It is a warranty item, "ya think", and I guess Ford is waiting until this becomes a daily issue rather than a few people complaining about it.

One last thing. If you have that MUSTANG sticker on your V-6, be careful, very careful, if you pressure wash your car. That tiny triangle that makes up the letter A popped off while I was hand washing mine Sunday morning. Also, the M on both sides has a tendency to pull loose at the tip of the point where the two lines meet to make letter M. If this is a problem when you are hand washing with soap and a sponge, imagine what 155 psi spray will do.

All things being equal, I love my wife's new car. Way to go Ford, you guys did good.
