Digital PID for pressure regulator

by

Is PID suitable for controlling a on/off solenoid valve which is trying to control an analogue feedback system.

An air-pressure regulator.
Want to set a limit to an air-pressure flow. The feedback is the actual measured pressure and the control is an ON/OFF valve which bleeds off excess pressure to atmosphere but keeping the internal closed loop pressure constant.

So under the set limit it must keep the valve closed but close to the threshold limit set it must begin to open the valve (pulse it) to start to release more and more air so that the pressure reaches the desired level as soon as possible but doesn't overshoot.

Any help or web address, books appreciated.

I would like to control this solenoid valve via software control (hence in the digital domain)
to enable me to set new threshold and get it to self learn the open loop response to help set up the PID coefficients.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Thanks

Pete
