The words to "Shilo" haunted me after I listened to the tale. The lyrics were different from Neil's other music, but I thought, if all of his other songs had meaning to me, then this one must too. I focused in on the song one afternoon. I played it repeatedly until it became hypnotic.
As I played the song, my subconscious released a childhood memory that was buried deep inside the caverns of my mind.
I was 12 years old when I started to write a love story. The plot was about a lonely boy and girl who meet and fall in love. I knew exactly how they felt. They were both very real to me. Their characters came alive every time I wrote about them.
I was just leading up the part in the story where the young couple meets, when my hand suddenly went limp. As the pen slid from the page, it scribbled a thin ink line across the paper. My hand rested in my lap, and my eyes closed as if I had been pulled into a trance. I had been transported to another time and place. My eyes wandered across the room in search of an indication as to where I was, then I saw his face. A bolt of magnetic energy indicated our mutual attraction the moment my eyes met his. We exchanged demure glances, but never spoke. He was the boy in my story, and I was the girl.
I never had any desire to finish writing the story after that incident. It was more exciting to experience the plot, rather than write about it. I went to see the boy again. I waited for him behind a large tree. When I saw him coming, I reached out my hand, and he took it. We laughed and played like children running through a meadow of golden daffodils. When it was time for me to leave, I turned to the boy and said with disappointment, "I have to go."
"No, please don't go," he said persuasively.
I looked down from the astral plane to my bedroom below. I saw the lifeless body of a young child lying on my bed. I touched his cheek and tenderly said, "You'll forget."
Neil's song, "Shilo," brought back forgotten memories of my childhood playmate. Our stories were the same. The boy I knew in my youth was Neil. He never forgot, and now, almost twenty years later, he was helping me to remember. The more I listened to Neil's music the more I grew to love him.
Another one of Neil's songs came into prospective the same day. It was called "Soolaimon." Like Shilo, I focused on the song and played it incessantly until it became hypnotic. This time instead of searching for the meaning of a song, I was looking for the source of a name. I went into a trance. I was transported back to Paris, France where I lived, studied and worked in the late 60's. I was sitting in my French class at the Alliance Francaise, and my French teacher was calling on me to answer a question. With her very strong French accent, she dropped the F and G from my last name. Her accent changed the A to an O and Sue Flammang became Sue Laimon. In the trance, she repeated my name over and over again like a broken record. She was calling Sue Laimon, Sue Laimon, Sue Laimon. A moment later I came to full awareness. The song that was spinning on the record player was calling Soolaimon, Soo, Soo Soolaimon.
I jumped up from the chair. "It's me!!!" I exclaimed.
