My first abcess (8 years ago) was drained by a small incision and then a catheter, but I have not heard of surgery to fix this. That sounds a bit extreme to me! When I had my second one I was told to just take 30 minute warm baths 2-3 times a day for a few days. My sister was told the same thing, and it seemed to work after about 3 days.
I think that surgery sounds quite extreme, but maybe that's how they deal with it in Australia (I live in the U.S.)
