I wanted to post this under my experience because mine seemed to be different from others. But I'll post it here for other looking for more information.
The first time I got a Bortholin's cyst I think I was 26 (1996). Since I didn't know what it was I figured it would just go away. After a few days it hurt to walk. I can't really remember but I think it was the weekend so I went to the emergency room. They numbed me (of course that is excruciatingly painful in and of itself) cut the cyst open and sent me on my way. Thank god that was over.
Unfortunately, it came back. This time my docotor sent me to the GYN for a marsupilization. That was to be the most painful experience of my life. I just hate male GYNs. Why do they go into that field. He did the procedure in his offie but didn't bother to tell me that it was going to be incredibly painful when I peed. I guess women who have had episiotomies have a similar experience. He was very unsympathetic when I called him but told me to either pee in the bathtub or have a squirt bottle and spay when I peed. Ahhh relief. I was also told that I should never have this problem again.
Well, in 2001 it came back on Christmas eve. Back to the emergency room where they cut and drained it again and this time packed it with gauze. If you are ever in this situation DO NOT! I repeat DO NOT!! Let them do this. It's useless and is incredibly painful to take out which required another trip back to the emergency room.
Here we are in 2005 and I had another one. Luckily this happened over the weekend and I was able to see a GYN on Monday. A woman thank God!!!!. She put in a wood catheter and although it sucks, it's supposed to create a permanent opening (much like the marsupilization). Let's hope this works. If it doesn't, the next time I get a cyst I will have to have surgery to have it removed.
I have also read that antibiotics do nothing for this type of cyst so I'm not sure why they are being prescribed for this other than people like to take medicine so doctor's prescribe it.
Good luck ladies. Feel free to contact me if you want some more information or just need someone to vent to. None of my other woman friends have had this so I feel kind of lonely out there when it comes to this particular problem.
