The fastest CPU the 520-540 cards will accept is the 233Mhz MMX CPU. The CPU's the 520-540 cards uses run at a much higher voltage than the AMD K6-3 series which run at 2 volts. That's why your CPU is running so hot. There are no provisions to set the voltage on the 520, 530 or 540 cards that low. The 550 card does have the ability to set the voltage at 2.1 volts which is within the ballpark on the K6-3 series.
Bottom line is that to use the K6-3 400 chip you need a 600 series card. To use the K6-2+ or k6-3+ chips ( which have the ability to set the CPU speed via software rather than by jumpers only as do the K6-2 and K6-3 ) you need a 550 or above.
