DOS support for Macintosh

This web forum is a site for the now defunct Apple MacDOScard. For three years, this existed as the MacDOScard mailing list but as more firewalls showed up and disallowed email into them - I feel that a web-based forum would be more appropriate. Hence the creation of this web site. Very soon, the MacDOScard mailing list will cease the exist. Current deadline for off-line is end September 1999.

I have an OrangePC 550 and could not get cable modem to work either. I switched to telephone hi-speed and it works OK but for some reason Cable Modem was always very slow. If you do a clean install on the Mac side it seems to help on the PC. All settings on the PC side were the same for both setups except for phone hi-speed I was given an IP and cable was atomatically asigned. My setup now on the mac is TCP IP set to inactive on the Mac side.

TCP/IP on PC Cards

by Henry (no login)

I'm not sure how the Orange software shares the Ethernet with the Mac and PC sides, but you would have to have a different IP address on the PC side than the Mac side. Apple's software uses Open Transport, which supports the routing to both the PC and Mac side. But, since normally the cable modem requires that you use automatic addressing using DHCP, this can be a problem. So, unless you are using a router behind the cable modem, or your cable modem provider is providing multiple static IP address, it seems like this would be very difficult to set up. And, this is where you can end up with bad performance because packets will get mixed up where to be delivered and get lost, causing slow perfomance due to retransmissions.

I have a seperate ethernet card set-up for the orange card, so I dont think it shares anything with the Mac except the pci bus ??? I'm running it through a linksys router witch assigns it its on IP address. I did quickly run this by a guy at Micro Orange (and I mean quickly, otherwise a 50.00 charge) he said they dont work well with cable modems and like you said it works better with dsl.......beats me why..... packets are packets

experience with AMD K6-2/400 CPU

by (no login)

I installed the K6-2/400 (chip rated 450) with the x2 multiplier setting (6 x inside chip) in an Orange 550 PCI card. Worked like a charm. Its a little cramped in my 8500 PPC now, with the fan on the CPU and all. It had the Pentium MMX 233 in it before. Result of the changeout was hardly noticable with high performance graphics software, as I think the 66 Mhz bus bottleneck makes for has a large fraction of slower performance . 3DNow enhancements? Did't notice anything. I run DirectX 7/8 in Win98, and one app requires a lot of 3D drawing in near real time. It chokes up either way, near impractical for such a PC. Part of the problem I suspect is the onboard S3/Virge GX on the Orange PC, which is certainly not a high performance video chip by todays standards.Oh well, at least the board is stable and everything on the PC runs well. No problem with the same program on a Dell 600 MHz P3 with ATI Rage Pro 64 bit graphics. Anyhow, this Orange 550 PC card is max'ed out.

Internet on Windows95

by (no login)

Advice or direction, please. I have a 12" 166mhz card with Windows95 installed, setup 2.1.7 and MacOS 9.1 on a Powerbase with G3/350 card. PCI ethernet from Realtek, but the PC doesn't recognize it. I have a windows installer disk but from the PC control panels I get a message saying hardware not found. Starting Explorer from the W95 desktop gives me a blank page. So how do I configure things so that the PC recognizes the driver or card so that I can connect via Windows?

Setup:
PowerBase 180 LP with PowerLogix G3/350
Realtek PCI 10/100 ethernet
EarthLink DSL
Linksys 4-port router
1-GB partition for PC (previously had 8.6 and 1.6.4 loaded, now works with 9.1), 500-MB canister
Total 24MB RAM on card

Thanks,
JSH

Here is a link to Apple's exact instructions on setting up Internet access on Windows '95: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=20255

The process does not involve configuring Windows for your specific Ethernet hardware as PCSetup has to emulate the network connectivity through the Mac side.

Good luck,
Henry

Networks software for Windows '95

by Henry (no login)

Yes, the same software is for both the DOS and PC Compatiblity cards. The thing missing from those instructions is how to setup networking before you setup TCP/IP. But, those instructions are contained in the Apple folder on the PC side after you install the Apple PC software. There is a ReadMe networking file which has the instructions on setting up networking using the Apple NDIS driver which you need first in order to add the TCP/IP protocol to gain the Internet access.

Good luck,
Henry

Re: Video RAM

by Henry (no login)

From: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=19894 it says:

12 Inch (Pentium Card)
----------------------
1 MB video DRAM (physical/logical), expandable to 2 MB(physical/logical) total using:

Two of the 5V, 256K x16, 60 ns, standard fast paged mode SOJ (standard outer J pin) package
DRAM chips (40-pin).

Some sample manufacturers and their part numbers are:
Micron #MT4C16257DJ-6
NEC #UPD424260LE60R
Samsung #KM416C256BJ-6
Hyundai #HY514260BJ-60

Personally, I went looking for a couple of these chips right around Christmas time, and had a very hard time finding them. Since current video cards don't use these chips anymore, they are very hard to find. I called around a lot of places. The trick is to ask for loose 256X16 or 512K Video RAM chips. I finally found some at a used PC hardware store for about a buck each.

Good luck,
Henry

Video memory for 12 inch PC

by (no login)

The Samsung KM416C256D 256K x 16 bit DRAM with Fast Page Mode was listed on their website about 2 years back, haven't looked since. You want to get the correct voltage version (5 or 3.3V) and the package is the 40 SOJ I think. Leads are bent under like gull wings. The NEC part in Apple Tech note 19735 (1/8/97) was long gone from production, and the Hyundai and Micron parts still listed then. It might be hard to find a few pieces though. Try companies like Digikey, Newark, Jameco, as well as PC surplus parts shops. One I found on the web with a AMD K6-2 450 for $22 was Star Components in California.

No Modem on PC side only (can't find Com)

by (no login)

It took me awhile to get around to fixin' things, and then getting back here, SO in case you didn't catch my previous post reply -- Thanks Henry and Al,

When I couldn't find the setup on the Win CD, your suggestions were absolutely correct. The Windoze 98 CD that I got hold of was an upgrade CD

Anyway after much more frustration... I have the PC side running fine, EXCEPT The latest is that I seem to have a conflict on Com 1. I can log on with the Apple side but when I try on the PC side, the computer thinks the port is in use.

I've tried resetting the Port from Win side properties. I've tried booting PC w/ NONE in the Com menus and booting software on PC then turning on the com and it still doesn't connect.

Am running a PM 4400 with an external Zoom modem.

Anyone run into something like this?
Thanks for all help/suggestions.

Larry,
Make sure that Apple Talk isn't set to the Modem Port in the Apple Talk control panel. That will grab the modem port and cause the message you are getting. Assign Apple Talk to TCP IP or another Port you arn't using.

Apple Talk set to remote only

Sounds like a good suggestion. The Apple Talk is set to 'remote only,' is this ok? I just changed the "remote only" pull down to 'printer,' and I'm still getting the error messages that the modem can not be found

Appletalk set to remote only

by Al (no login)

Larry,
That's how my Apple Talk is set and my Zoom Modem on Comm 1 works fine in both my 4400 and my 7300. If you have a program called Comm Closer you can use it to close the Mac Comm Port in case some extention has grabbed it at bootup. This way you can find out if this is your problem.

Apple 100Mhz Dos card in a B&W G3?

by (no login)

I've got a chance to get an Apple DOS Card (100 mhz) pulled (working) from a 7200...

I don't know much about these (but I got the other five of them up and running in the other five 7200's... ended up cannibalizing this 7200 for it's other parts... ). I got Win 95 running on them.. an frankly I thought they were kinda cool!
The client will give me the "spare" with cable(s) for free if I want it...

I'd love to be able to get one working in my B&W G3 450 (Rev 2, OS 9.2.1).

I've got access to an 8500 for any setup requiring a floppy..

Anyone have any experience (positive or negative) with one of these in a B&W?

I know this is sort of a long shot... but my needs are light... (like, "Just Playing"...).

Thanks in advance!
Paul F.

Re: Apple 100Mhz Dos card in a B&W G3?

by Henry (no login)

I know that the 100MHz card is not supported in the Beige G3, so I don't know what that means for the B&W G3. I never understood why the 100MHz card was not supported in the Beige G3. I thought maybe it had something to do with the audio input because the 166Mhz card has a third audio input which gets used in the Beige G3 (although I haven't noticed any difference between plugging in to either input). But, I suspect it must have something more to do with PCI bus speed. I think you'd have to find out why the 100MHz card is not supported on the beige G3 to figure out if it can run on the B&W G3 or not.

Good luck,
Henry

Yup, you can make it work

by GeoffP (no login)

I had a 166 Dos card working in my B&W G3. You need to download the pace usb floppy driver from their website (other usb floppy drivers may work). You don't actually have to have a floppy drive to get it to work. The trick I had to figure out was how to boot it up with Dos without a floppy. (Been so long I can't tell you, but it surely wasn't hard if I don't remember how). Hope this helps.

PC cards, manuals, disks, accessories

I am quite happy with the Orange 550 now that the drivers 3.4.2 work with WIN98 fairly well. I made a partition on the drive with PC DOS 3.3 last night, and it is bootable, to run an ancient DOS-only program that I still like (that won't run any other way). I am unloading all of the REPLY/APPLE PC cards that I collected over the years. Here is the list:

(3) 166 MHz Pentium Apple 12 inch, one with video problem (dated 1997)

(2) 100 MHz Pentium Apple 12 inch cards (dated 1996)

(1) 100 MHz ? Reply 12 inch card (dated 1996)

Please respond to my email address directly. No guarantees that everything works, I just want to get them to someone else who can use them or distribute them further to the wanting.
