This web forum is a site for the now defunct Apple MacDOScard.
For three years, this existed as the MacDOScard mailing list but as more firewalls showed up and disallowed email into them - I feel that a web-based forum would be more appropriate. Hence the creation of this web site.
Very soon, the MacDOScard mailing list will cease the exist. Current deadline for off-line is end September 1999.

2.1.7 mirror? RAM on 7" card?by (no login)First, thank you, whoever it was (i forgot... Now, the question... My card's a '7" PC Compatibility Card' (or so the BIOS says), Cyrix 5x86 CPU (surface-mounted w/ tiny heatsink, had to add an extra fan to cool the beast), ATI Mach64 Turbo GFX chip, SB16 chip, and one RAM slot (what do they call that weird Mac RAM anyway?). My problem is... why the heck can my card only go up to 8MB, though the Mac powering it has 32mb? I have an 8mb strip in it right now, but that's all I can do because when I try to put one 16mb strip from the Mac into it, it freezes when I go to Switch to PC... but when I take it out completely (balloon help for RAM mapping = "This menu is not available because a SIMM is installed on the [PC card] and will be used instead of Macintosh memory"), it still gives me the exact same tooltip, but the graphic no longer says "DIMM", it says "No RAM". What's the deal? Can I map Mac RAM or not? By the way, it's running in a Umax SuperMac c500 w/180MHz 603e/180. It works great with 8 on 95 - if you can stand waiting 15 minutes to load Internet Explorer 5.5... sigh. I need to move up to 98 too... not like I can do that on 8MB of RAM! Help! |
Re: 2.1.7 mirror? RAM on 7" card?by Henry (no login)The PC/DOS compatibilty cards haven't allowed sharing the Mac memory since MS-DOS and Windows 3.1. As I recall, you could only share 8 MB of Mac memory with the DOS card. But, now adays, you have to put a memory module into the card in order to run Windows. The different cards have different max amounts that they support, and you can usually find these out looking in the Apple site. The funny memory that they take is almost always the same memory that the Mac that they work it takes. So, you will need to put at least a 16MB memory module into that PC compatibility card in order to load windows on it... Good luck, Henry |

Orange386 Disk Controller Chipby (no login)Hi - I have recently purchased an Orange386 card and the supplied documentation mentions an upgrade kit (which I am certain is unavailable now). But, the documentaion does have instructions on how to create the cabling for it. The only problem is it does not specificly mention the disk controller chip needed (which would have been supplied in the upgade kit) for the card. It does say an external floppy drive connected to the cabling using a 37 pin socket is "Driven by an ACC 3201 controller" Any ideas on what chip I should be looking for? Thanks, Paul |
Bios update for 660by (no login)Ive tried to install an amd k6-2+ on my 660 card and it didn´t work.(100mhz bus timing 5,5 or 5,0) a k6-3 works at 400mhz did i need a bios update where can i get one |
Bios Update 660by (no login)Hi Jan Peter, I think thats normal and you do not need a Bios update. I own an Orange 660 too and If I try to runn a 400 MhZ prozessor on 500 Mhz, it simply does not work. Are you running the 660 in a G4? |
K6-2+ on a 660?by Nils Welsh (no login)I've been running a K6-2+ on a OrangePC 550 successfully for one year now. The only thing I had to do was to change the jumpers to 2.1 V and to install the CTU (Central tweaking unit) software, which increased performance of the K6-2+ notably. Recently I replaced my 550 board with a 660 board to obtain better 3D graphic acceleration and a higher bus frequency. To my surprise, the 660 functions well with a K6-2 processor, but not with the K6-2+, even at a low multiplier setting (400 MHz). The PC screen simply turns black directly upon launcing of the OrangePC software. Could it be that the BIOS setup (accessed when a regular K6-2 is running) needs to be altered? I had a look at the different BIOS setup options (by hitting the del button during memory test) and I'm afraid that they were too technical and complicated for me. |
Re K6-2+ on a 660by Al (no login)The Orange PC Bios doesn't support the K6-2+ or K6-3+ CPU's as they were released after the last release of the Orange PC software ( which actually contains the bios just like the Apple PC Setup software does ). You can however use the + series of CPU's in a system that does't have Bios support for this type of CPU by setting the CPU multiplier to 3 and controlling the CPU speed by software ( which is what the + series primarily added ). This can be done with a program called K6speed.exe which is run after the computer boots and which will set the multiplier up to 6. |
K6-2+ on a 660?by Nils Welsh (no login)Thanks for the advice. I followed your suggestion and set the multiplier to 3, and the PC actually started to boot. The processor was recognized as an unknown 300 MHz and the memory test ran successfully. The Award plug and play BIOS was loaded, but then nothing. I don't think it's an extention conflict because I tried base and full OS8.1, 9.1 and 9.22 setups without any success. I also tried inserting a boot floppy, but the PC didn't try to access it. |
Re: K6-2+ on a 660by Al (no login)Try reducing the OPC bus speed from 100 Mhz to 66 Mhz and see if that works. |
K6-2+ on a 660?by Nils Welsh (no login)Still no luck. The K6-2+ was recognized as a 200 MHz unknown processor, but the boot-up process did not reach any further. Perhaps there is a specific issue with my particular configuration that makes the K6-2+ incompatible. |
Re: K6-2+ on a 660by Al (no login)According to the one article I read on using K6-2+ or K6-3+ CPU's on motherboards that don't have Bios support it was only necessary to set the multiplier to 3 and use software control to up the multiplier "on the fly" after Windows boots. I'm wondering if your OPC prefs might have gotten corrupted when you tried to boot the card using the 4X multiplier. Why not move your current prefs file to another folder and reboot which will create a new prefs file. Then you can select one of the boot disk images ( found in the OPC Web Installer boot disk images folder ) and see if it will boot. |
K6-2+ on a 660?by Nils Welsh (no login)I reinstalled the OPC software, trashed the old prefs file and tried to boot from a boot floppy, but no success. After the memory test, the OrangePC didn't even try to access the floppy. That the 660 doesn't support the K6-2+ makes sense to me, but why did it work with the older 550? |
Re: K62+ on a 660by Al (no login)Doesn't make any sense to me either especially since I believe the Bios is actually contained in the OPC software like the Apple PC card Bios is contained in PC Setup. Since the Bios works with the 550 it should work with the 660 as well. I did note in the Manual there is a comment that if you are having problems with the emulated features such as disk access and you are using other than Apple Extension Manager to manage your extensions such as conflict catcher it recommends disabling the aftermarket extension manager, installing the Apple Extension Manager and using the setting System Software ( possibly an extension conflict ? ). If this doesn't work you can always go with a K63 400 ( not a + ) CPU which does work with the 660. |
DESPERATELY seeking OPC WIndows98 Easy Install CDby (no login)HELP! I desperately need a copy of an OrangePC Windows 98 Easy Install CD (the one that installs the OPC software and Win98). Can anyone help? Thank you, Rob |
Orange PCby (no login)Hello Rob, I read your help-question at network54.com. I need the easy-install-CD including Win 98 too. I own a license for Win 98 but the Orange-Micro-Support in Germany can’t help me. Did you find the OPC Win 98 Esay Install CD? And if yes cut you probably send my a copy. It’s no question, I will take the costs. I would be very happy to receive an answer Johannes |
Cyrix 300 in OPC 530?by (no login)I once ran an AMD 400 MHz processor in an OrangePC 520 and it ran HOT, because it was 3.3 or 3.5 volts, NOT the 2.8 of the factory processor. I now have an Intel 233MMX processor (2.8 volts) in a 530 card and it runs fine. Has anyone tried a Cyrix 300 MHz procesor, 2.9 volts (.1 volts more than what the card calls for) in a 520 or 530? Thanks, Rob |
Pc compatability card 166by Warren Thomas (no login)Where can I downloadd the manual for my card, as I'm not sure how the audio leads link up, also why does it have a Mac-type floppy drive conecter onboard? and whats the small conecter in the middle of the card for, is that for the sound blaster module, if so will the module from a 486 PC com-card fit in it? |
Dim PC Monitor w/ OrangePC 530 cardby (no login)I have an OrangePC 530 card with an Intel 233MMX chip. I just got the card (used) but I have experience with these cards. When I switch to the PC the monitor is somewhat dim, not just in Windows, but during the boot process too. Any ideas? Thanks! Rob |
dim pc monitorby scothiam (no login)I have just recently aquired a 530 card myself, I am currently using a radius Dos on PPC card in my nubus 7100/80. I have experienced poor monitor conditions when using adapters wich allow me to use my pc monitor with my mac while also using the pc cards monitor cables. This would affect the monitor in the mac environment as well. could this be your problem? I am currently toying with different settings on my monitor adapter mac/pc-monitor, and considering purchasing a mac monitor to cut out this adapter period. |
linux on dos cardsby (no login)doing some searching for any info on getting linux to run on a dos card (any from apple, orangePC, or radius, any model) Found little info, point in the right direction? thanks |
Highly unlikelyby Randall Venhola (no login)Getting Linux to run on the DOS cards is highly unlikely. You will need to re-write the pcsetup drivers. It is not worth the effort. |
multiple pc cardsby (no login)Has anyone attempted to run more than one compatability card in one mac, possibly of different makes (ala one orangePc and one radius). curious |
Won't Workby Randall Venhola (no login)The pcsetup software will only recognize one card. |
pc setupby (no login)Can I get a copy of pc setup from you? Do I need it to run an Orange PC 660 on my Blue & White g3? thanx. -kp |
Re; multiple pc cardsby GregF (no login) Actually, it is possible to run an OrangePC (at least the 620 series) and a Radius DOM card in the same machine at the same time. I believe this is possible because each app will recognize it's specific card, for example the OrangePC application will only control an Orange card, but not an Apple or Radius card, and vice versa with PCSetup. I know this works because I ended up doing it many years ago beacuse of the lack of DOS sound support in the Orange cards, and so I added my Radius back to my 6500. Now both cards will run at the same time but as for video, if I remember correctly only one will work at a time. In other words you can switch to one, but have to switch back to the Mac environment before switching to the other. As for how intercompatible this setup can be with say copying an pasting etc between cards. I don't know I did not try. As for Randall's point I believe he is right in the sense that PCSetup can only recognize one card (one Apple or certain Radius cards at a time). So, if you are feeling daring give it a try Hope this helps Greg |
DOS 6.22 software for Apple Dos Cardby Thomas (no login)Hi Got a Apple Dos PCI Card 100Mhz without the Dos 6.22 software. All the other software related to this card is available from various sites. Is there someone who could share this file with me or can I use original Windows software rather than Dos 6.22 provided by Apple for this card. Thank you for your time. |
Re: DOS 6.22 Software for Apple Dos Cardby Al (no login)As far as the OS software is concerned, the card uses standard Microsoft DOS and or Windows 95/98 and earlier software. |
