I have four such trials under my belt so far, each time the mule has simply stood in the PF partied with the character who does Diablo in. Now the character killing Diablo has not yet done this quest in these trials. Some interesting stuff from Andariel trials:
Shepherd hasn't done Andariel quests, sheep in town, partied: credit
Shepherd done Andariel quest, sheep in town, partied: no credit
Shepherd done Andariel quest, sheep on Cats 4, *unpartied*: gets credit and the Cats 4 TP that opens when you kill Andariel opened by the sheep nowhere near where Andariel died.
