...I think she may have developed into a more likable person in recent years. She grew up about 20 miles from my house, and her family is still there. As a matter of fact, she was "Miss Crawford County" (my home county) in 1975.
Before she "hit it big" in Total Recall, she was a guest judge at our local scholarship pagent, which I was in - ONLY because of the scholarship. This was after she did "Action Jackson" and "King Solomon's Mines" but long before anybody really knew who she was.
Anyway, she acted every bit the prima donna. First, she arrived an hour late. The other judges went out to greet her, and she walked right past them as if they didn't matter, stomped into the interviewing room and began interviewing the contestants without the other judges, as if her vote was the only one that mattered. Each and every girl in the pageant (including me) was severely insulted by Ms. Stone at least once during the interviews. One girl came out crying over it.
To make things worse, our mayor had declared it "Sharon Stone Day" and presented her with a plaque while the scores for the contest were being tabulated. She stood up on my high school stage and pretended to be overwhelmed with emotion, and pretended to cry. Well, you need to understand, she's not a good enough actress to pull that off. It was obviously fake, and I thought it was insulting.
Plus, she was all make-up. It was July in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and for those of you who don't know the area, that means overwhelming, oppressive humidity. The woman was practically melting! She looked pretty bad, in my humble opinion.
And of course, I'm probably a bit bitter because the girl who won the pageant (and hence the scholarship) never actually went to college, so the scholarship never got used. The funniest thing about her winning is that she had to do all of these promotional events for the sponsoring merchants - mostly area retail stores - and she wasn't even allowed in most of the stores in town because she was a notorious shoplifter! Haha!
