Police Pull Plug On Planned Pennywise Performance

(6/16/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Pennywise's scheduled free afternoon performance
Tuesday (June 19) in the parking lot of the Sunset Strip Tower Records has been
banned by local police because to the combative nature of the group's new
single, "Fuck Authority."

According to a spokesperson for the Southern California punk group, despite
previously having issued proper permits, the city of West Hollywood "has now
decided that the band's song 'F--k Authority' is offensive and cannot be
performed on their city street."

The gig was to mark the release of Pennywise's latest album, Land Of The
Free?, whose political themes include on free speech issues. "The song was
written as a protest against the widespread corruption in government and in the
police force, not as an attack on authority in general," says the group's
spokesperson.

Pennywise appears on the Vans Warped Tour (owned by LAUNCH Media), which
kicks off June 22 in Phoenix.
