Response to A Lesson in Life Ch 1

Ch 2

“Dr. Andrews, you’re needed immediately in room 213. Jennifer has been asking for you since her parents left,” the nurse tapped the shoulder of a young woman looking over a chart.
“Thanks, I’ll go see her right away,” Alysia Andrews jotted a quick note in the chart then headed down the corridor. She paused outside the door taking a deep breathe. Jennifer Wilson was one of her favorite patients. Jennifer had been spending nights off and on in the hospital for the last six months as she waited for a heart transplant.
“What took you so long?” Jennifer glared as Alysia came near her.
“I’m sorry I had to do my rounds,” Alysia sat down on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling tonight?”
“Ok, just tired. I’m also sick of waiting for my new heart. I miss playing soccer and hanging out with my friends,” Jennifer deeply sighed.
“I know, I’m trying to get you moved up on the list,” Alysia had spent countless hours trying to make Jennifer’s transplant happen soon but she was having no luck.
“I don’t want to die,” Jennifer’s brown eyes glistened with tears.
“I promise I won’t let that happen to you,” Alysia hugged Jennifer. “You will live a long happy life.”
“I’m trying to believe that,” Jennifer wiped at her tears.
“Just trust me,” Alysia reached into her pocket taking out her iPod. “Here you can borrow this. I’ll pick it up at the end of my shift.”
“Thank you,” Jennifer smiled broadly. “Can you convince my parents to get me one?”
“I’ll try, is there…” Alysia suddenly trembled as she felt a familiar icy cold breeze fill the room.
“Dr. Andrews, are you …” Jennifer was stopped mid sentence when Alysia lightly touched her hand freezing her with her mouth open.
“What are you doing here? You promised me you wouldn’t take her. I won’t let you do this,” Alysia stood up looking around the room. “Damn it show yourself.”
“That is no way to speak to your father. Wait till I tell your mother,” a tall dark haired man looking to be in his early forties appeared in front of her.
“It is if you’re going to take her life,” Alysia exclaimed staring up into his haunting icy blue eyes.
“I don’t break my promises. I’m not here for her. I won’t be after her soul till she is 87 years old.”
“So why are you here?” Alysia asked crossing her arms.
“I need you to do me a favor.”
“Sure what?”
“You’re going to get a visit soon. I want you to grant your guest’s wish after putting up a very convincing fight,” her father slowly paced around her seeing the confusion in her dark blue eyes.
“Do I know these visitors?”
“You know one its Kane Calaway,” her father said softly watching his daughter for a reaction. She simply shook her head in disbelief.
“I can’t believe you want me to help him after all he put you through.”
“It won’t be help you give him. You will be teaching him a lesson finally and I will be eternally grateful for you doing that,” her father went towards Jennifer running his fingers through her short brown hair. “I might even be able to help with your quest for a heart for this child.”
“I will only appreciate that if you help without harming another child,” Alysia’s eyes met his and she saw the hurt she had just caused.
“You know I only bring death to the ones whose time it is and those that tempt fate and force me to intervene,” he rested his hand on her shoulder. “I have you to right my wrongs or at the very least argue why I should give a mortal more time. You are the greatest gift I was ever given and your powers are a blessing.”
“You consider it a blessing I consider them a curse sometimes,” Alysia softly spoke.
“Alysia, I have apologized for centuries for what has happened to you. I can not change your destiny. At least now you seem to have found a way to make yourself happy,” her father noticed how much happier she had been since she had decided to become a pediatric cardiologist after centuries of staying out of the mortal normal way of life. The hours she spent making children healthy seemed to agree with her. For the first time, he had seen his daughter smile more than frown. “I have to be off your guests are close by, don’t forget to put on a good protest before granting their wish. I will be in touch later,” he leaned down kissing her cheek. In a flash, he was gone along with the chill.
“I better get out of here. I don’t want to put Jennifer at risk,” Alysia went back to where she was touching Jen again unfreezing her.
“Okay?” Jennifer finished her question like time had never stood still for her.
“Yes, I’m fine. I need to go check on another patient. I will be back shortly,” Alysia went to stand up. Jennifer grabbed her hand.
“Please try not to take very long, it gets lonely around here at this time of the night.”
“I won’t be long,” Alysia started to feel what her father had felt the approach of darkness. She turned away just in time for Jennifer not to see her eyes shimmer a silvery red as Kane whispered her name. She hurried out the door to the stairwell leading to the roof. Her eyes glowed again as Kane summoned her in an angry annoyed voice.
