Response to A Lesson in Life Ch 3
Alysia opened the door to her home immediately feeling like someone had been there. Her eyes shimmered a silvery grey as she tried to sense who was there. She shuddered slightly feeling his strong presence as she walked slowly towards the french doors that led to the deck.
“No, it can’t be him. He wouldn’t come here,” she flashed for a moment to the last time she had seen him in Paris over 100 years ago. He had sworn he would do everything in his powers to never be in her presence again. “He broke his promise,” she softly said seeing the massive man leaning on the rail. The breeze blew his long black hair away from his handsome face.
“You made me break my promise by your carelessness tonight,” the Undertaker’s husky voice sent shivers down her spine. He slowly turned looking at her with deep sadness. “I always thought you were a smart lady but tonight proved I don’t know you at all.”
“Mark, you never knew me. What I do is none of your business anymore,” she turned away from his soul searching green eyes heading into her kitchen.
“When you bring my brother’s dead wife back to life it becomes my business especially when I was expecting your father to bring me her soul. Why in the hell would you do anything to help Kane? You hate him,” he was right behind her.
“I’m not discussing this with you. I want you to leave right now,” she said flipping through a stack of mail.
“Oh I’m not leaving. Look at me!” he grabbed the mail throwing it to the floor. She turned staring at him letting out a frustrated sigh. “Why did you bring her back? I want the truth now.”
“I..,” she paused knowing there was no point in lying to him. He would know immediately and keep pushing till the truth came out. “I did it as a favor for my Father. He asked me to bring Lita back to teach Kane a lesson.”
“What kind of lesson?” Taker didn’t understand what was going on.
“I don’t know he didn’t say,” Alysia tried to move past him. He put out his arm stopping her.
“Why do you think he asked you to do this?” Taker searched her eyes for answers seeing she was being truthful.
“I really don’t know. Lita doesn’t love Kane maybe my Father wants Kane to spend years watching Lita and Edge have a happy life while he suffers in misery.”
“Lita is mortal. What kind of life can she have with Edge unless he turns her which I will not allow,” Taker tried to reason things out.
“I don’t think you could stop him. He truly loves her even though he is a vampire. I thought true love was impossible for a vampire,” she softly said remembering how Taker had told her he could never truly love her since he was a vampire.
“Its lust not love,” Mark said seeing the hurt in her eyes mixed with the love she still felt for him. He looked away from her knowing he had to deny his endless love for her.
“Whatever, can you leave now?” Alysia brushed past him sitting down on the sofa. “I would like to catch up on the news then get some rest.”
“You’re enjoying leading the life of mortal,” he observed watching her stretch out on the sofa turning the TV on.
“Its better than hiding away in my mother’s lair watching the years slowly pass by and waiting for my father to mess up which he rarely does. There are lots of immortals and others charading as human so go lecture one of them and leave me alone. Your own brother has been pretending to be normal till Lita ripped his heart out,” Alysia reached up pulling out the elastic letting her hair cascade down her back. Mark was silent for a moment thinking of all the times he had run his fingers lovingly through her hair.
“I should try the mortal life. I’m going to stay with you till I figure out what your father is up to,” he sat down next to her.
“The hell you are. You can’t stay with me. Go back to your dreary mansion and the shadows you love so much. Doesn’t your father need you to usher the evil souls to him?” she inched away from him.
“You’re stuck with me whether you like it or not. My father doesn’t need me. I just guide the souls to have something to do. I get bored just like you maybe living like a mortal will amuse me more. Also I know your father will come see you and I want to be here when he does,” Taker sat back extending his massive arm over the back of the couch.
“Suit yourself,” she stood up knowing there was no point in arguing with him. If he planned to stay there wasn’t much she could do to make him leave. She was almost past him when he grabbed her arm pulling her down onto his lap. For a moment she was stunned being so close to him again feeling the coldness of his touch. “Let me go,” she stared into his eyes.
“Not just yet,” he held onto to her tightly. “I’ve never forgotten about you. I had to leave you that night in Paris for your own good. I want to try to make things right between us so we don’t spend eternity hating one another.”
“Things will never be right again. I truly loved you and you left me with some lame excuse about us not being destined to be together,” she tried to get free from his grip.
“You’re right I should have been honest with you. I will tell you the truth soon once I speak to your Father,” he blocked his mind to her not wanting her to sense his fears that her Father would not allow him to tell her the truth.
“I don’t want to hear it now. You should have told me that night instead of walking away and making me feel like our whole relationship was a lie,” she gave up her struggle.
“It wasn’t a lie. I truly wanted to stay with you it …,” he paused swallowing hard. “We will talk more about this later. Do you enjoy working at the hospital?” he asked changing the subject.
“Yes, how did you know about that?”
“I’ve been watching over you. I have never been very far away even those ninety years you rested. Since you started this mortal charade, I felt the need to check in on you a few times a day,” he smiled thinking it had been a lot more than a few times over the last 10 years.
“You confuse me especially since you swore to stay away from me,” she shook her head wishing he would unveil his thoughts.
“The confusion will go soon,” he slowly reached out running his fingers through her blonde hair. At first she pulled back then she gave in to the comfort his touch always brought to her.
“Not soon enough,” she sighed looking into his eyes. “Are you really planning to stay here with me?”
“Yes, it’ll be a welcome change. I have tired of being alone all the time.”
“How am I going to explain you to my neighbors?” she softly said.
“However you like I can be a friend visiting or a long lost relative or…,” he paused running his fingers over her lips, “I could be your…” Alysia trembled for a moment.
“Friend is a good enough explanation,” she started to stand up interrupting what he was going to say.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?” he held onto to her.
“I’ll be back in a little while. I’m going to take a shower. I know there is no way to kick you out so you can start making yourself at home in the guestroom down the stairs second door on the left,” she pointed to the stairs.
“Guest room?” he gave her an amused look.
“Yes, I’m sure you’ll find it quite comfortable.”
“We will see,” he smiled loosening his hold. “Go ahead and get your …,” he was stopped mid sentence by the French doors flying open. He immediately shot up moving in front of Alysia as a dark mist filled the room. A figure started to slowly appear making both of them cringe.
