This is up to your own personnal preference, mainly. Oviously, I would suggest something simple, with a simple body and wing mix. Usually the Durham Ranger and Barron are tied in lessons, but if you are starting truly from scratch, I would tie a few spey flies, as they are larger than the usual trout patterns, and do incorporate a few of the techniques needed for Classics. There are a variety of books with patterns in them, Mikael Frodin's Classic salmon flies has a ton of patterns, with pictures. T.E. Pryce Tannett and George Kelson both wrote books with hundreds of patterns, and reprints of their books are available, but you have to search for those two. Hope this helped!
