As interesting as this sounds (let's face it, it's cheap and probably lots of fun, all for the "cost" of carrying a tent and sleeping bag), I would really like to know where the experienced cross country riders stay.
Is it logical to assume there will be a hotel / motel / hostle / B&B every 75-100 miles? Is there a place to look this up and make reservations a day or so in advance?
