Im the same one that post about biking from Md to Fla. Im new here and didnt realize I had to put a name in and I came up anomynous(sp?)

Anyway, during a cross country bike ride, is it a requirement to follow bike routes in certain states? Or can you pretty much follow any route you desire?
This is my first attempt at a cross country ride(well, mine's not from coast to coast, but north to south). Any input is appreciated!!

i live in daytona beach florida and ive been trying to plan a ride like this...those people that go from coast to coast are crazy lol
