by tater

i'm hunting a smokey river bred bluetick that is a fair coon dog but if he didn't just run the coon up the tree red hot he comes off the tree when i get there and just kinda sniffs around then he hops back on the tree, he does it bad enough to get me minused in the hunts.

hey mark, i don't want you to think i'm just a straight blue tick man, i'm hunting a pup out of Stylish Banjo and another walker gyp with this dog, all three are young, the blue tick is about 2, the banjo gyp is 18 months, the other gyp is 12 months, the blue dog does almost all the hunting as off yet, he strikes the coon and runs them, and the banjo gyp tree's the crap out of them, the other pup don't do much, just thought i would fill ya in a little more.

Has the dog been hunted with another dog and if this other dog, was agressive, at the tree it may have discouraged the young dog to stay at the tree.Have patience with a young dog.More information is needed to help you further.

Young dog not hunting

by larry

I have been hunting a walker pup since he is 8 months old and, he can do it all by himself and trees every coon in the woods. His only problem is hunting, he is a very skiddish dog aand has only had one whipping for runnign a fox, he will hunt about 15 to 20 mins, and if he cant find a track, he will run thru the woods barking, then come back. i know he knows what he is out there for cause i hunt him by his self 4 to 5 nights a week and he might tree 3 a night,or maybe not get a track. But he does super good cept the hunting. My question is does anyone have any ideas on how i can get him to hunt a lil' deeper, cause when he does hunt, he usually only hunts about, 4 or 5 hundred yards. I have ask numerous people i hunt with and everyone says whip him for coming bac, but i really cant do that with him cause he is so scared of everything. please if you have any ideas, i would appreciate it.

Well for starters i would probably not hunt him by himself as much as with other dogs that hunt deep. I always tend to hunt my shallow dogs with the ones that really hunt deep. It makes for a good hunt. Hope this will help.

Curs???

by Tim

well since you are only fourteen you should try alot of different things, find some people in your area that hunt, go with them and stuff, personally i hunt Walkers, along with %75 of other coonhunters. and I have hunted since i was , well as long as i can remember, and i have hunted with good curs, but they were squirell (<----Spelling) dogs and the ones that would tree cons, were all pretty ill on tree. I have recently been hunting with alot of Tony Clevenger's blueticks and they are amazing dogs. They are very lound and do not act like blueticks, they act like walkers, 120 to150 bpm, and very hard hunters, and the last 3 litters every single pup had ran and treed it's own coon by 5 months old. Well that is my opinion, but.... not a cur.. Tim (east Tenn)

Curs Vs. Hounds

by Jbuck

It has been my experance that hounds, expecally Walkers, head out to stike a track when turned loose, if they have to go a mile deep to do so they will. This is a trait that is necessary in comp. hunts, they will hunt hard and good ones will run and tree a smart old coon that knows and uses all the tricks to loose a dog. However with my aging knees and desire to be back at the house in time to get a good nights sleep before work the next day, I have switched to Curs. I have one Kemmer and one OMBC, both dogs will check a patch of timber and if they don't stike a track return to me and we will go check another patch or load up and come home. At your age and with youthfull energy a hound should be fine for you, but don't elminate the cur from consideration either. Check out www.ukcdogs.com, then go to the Curs and Fiest page. Which ever type of coon treeing machine you get welcome to the world of coon hunting, stick with it and you will have many hours of enjoyment. Good Luck

blueticks/airedales/walkers

by

Hi my name is skylar and i live in montana. I'm only 19 years old but started hunting with my dad when I was 8 or 9. I've hunted with a lot of dogs, had a lot of dogs, I know a lot of hunters. Don't listen to these egotistical knot heads who tell ya that it has to be a certain kind of dog. My family has always had blueticks since the 50's, and we totally love them, they don't come any better. But we know people who have walkers and their every bit as good. Redbones and black and tans are great too. I haven't hunted with curs yet but I know a guy who loves them, but you miss out on the whole hound experiance. of course you can have both also. I have hunted with airedales and am expecting a new one on the way real soon. My opinion of airedales is,they are brilliant, fast, love to hunt, fun, and they don't bark much. they're a real buddy dog. I'll never be without them again, but I will always have my blueticks too. I would recommend Airedales and hounds over curs myself but you talk to will say just the opposite. My experiance with curr owners is they're full of hot air. They talk and talk and talk and talk and never show, not to down talk the breed though. Basically just find a breed that interests you the most, and find a good line of them, that is the ONLY THING that matters. If you get into blueticks here are the best blood lines I know of. My family has had these bloodlines for years. Smokey River, Diamond Jim, Vaun, utchman, and Hammer. You must be careful though, lots of people say they have this stuff and they don't. As far as walkers, redbones, curs, etc. I don't now enough about the breeding to help you. I hope this was of some help to you! Remember it is all about you, don'tlet others decide for you, you need to decide.

Best Treeing Dog

by

There is another treeing dog breed, whcih is neither hound or Cur Dog. This is the West Siberian Laika. Go to http://www.nordicart.multiservers.com/
for more information, but here I will tell everyone that all Laikas (100% of the puppies) start treeing naturally, just take him in woods and turn loose a few time every week. The dog will tree squirrels by day and coons by night. Moreover, he will tree or bay bears, bay wild boar and moose. My dogs tree gray foxes and groundhogs and, occasionally, bobcats, but raccoons and squirrels is their most frequent game. Laika hunts within close range, prefers hot tracks and barks well only when the animal is treed or bayed. This is a dog breed of professional hunters of Ural and Siberia who have lived off land in wilderness. Now, we have over 100 Laikas in the USA and almost all of them are in hands of hunters.

I don't reccomend hitting the mule, It sounds like your being the jackass, You can't teach an animal anything by brute force. Your mule ain't use to hunting with you yet, give em' lots of time and don't make him scared of ya. Another thing: You hunt skunks with mules and hounds? your nuts! I've been hunting coons all my life but never a damned old skunk.

Starting coon dogs

by Gene

This is no joke. Get a live trap and trap a coon. Throw the coon into the kennell with your pups. It'll make or break em' but it works. Them dogs will be so pissed off that they will kick the s**t out of that coon and hate em' forever. It worked with my Redbones.
By the way, excellent choice in dogs.

Tips For Daniel

by coondog

Daniel it sounds like you area kid and so am I. I am only 17 years old but i have been hunting for a about 6 years. Thing that i think works the best is to get them coon crazy first. How you do this is set a trap a live coon trap with Meat and some vanilla extract. set the trap then once you get the coon kill and skin it for its hide. Then you tie your dog back and but the hide on a peice of rope and tease the dog with itand let him chew on it just a little bit and if he barks at it patthim up good to let him know good job. Then you start to make drags with an older dog to get him going it works i have a 11 month old walker dog that can tree on wild coons by him self and that how i tought him.

you need to get you a trapped coon and let him bay it, then pull it up a tree and let him tree on it, then start making trails with the cage and turn him out on the track, that might get him going.
