Talk about anything that has to do with Coons and Hunting.
What is the "average sized" coon in your area?
by Dean D
The reason I am asking: I have take coon in my younger years that weighed over 60 pounds... twice now I have been "called" on that by different type hunters. Both times I have provided links where that supported my claim that these critters do indeed get that large (I have heard of some going over 70 pounds but never seen it.)
So, I thought a good place to get the averages would be off a message board related specifically to coon hunting. I just bought a Patterdale Terrier and I am going to start hunting again... earth hunting. Earth hunters consensus is that raccoon don't get much bigger than 20 pounds... I say that is due to geographic area and climate. So what say you?
I hope to see lots of replies from a wide range of States.
I was born and raised in oklahoma and coon hunted nearly all my life I just recentley moved to colorado the coons back home we're average fifteen to twenty pounds. If you happen to tree and kill a thirty or thirtyfive pound coon that was very rare which I've only done a couple of times. Now i'am talking about eastern Oklahoma out in westwrn Oklahoma there bigger.I haven't seen to many coon here in Colorado but the ones I have seen we're pretty big probley thirty pounds.I hope I was some help latter.
i live in the south western part of pennsylvania
and most of the coon here ive seen way on average between 15 & 25 lbs depending on area most around the rivers are a tad bigger ive seen up to 35 lbs hope that helpes
they will run up to 45 lbs (big one)
avg. adult coon prabably30-35 lbs.havent seen a 60 lbs coon but i agree if you find habitat to suppport it w/o hunting presure they probably would hit 60 lbs
I think you are full of it. You don't have a clue what you are talkin about, Live right on the edge of the ozarks and the S.E. part of Missouri and I think our coons are probably about the same weight and the biggest coon I have ever seen only weighed 27 pounds on certified meat scales, he was killed out of a barn full of corn.
sir, my biggest coon with a dog has been 33pnds, but my brother picked 1 up that was hit by a car thatt weighed 51 1/4 pnds, i picked one up on the road friday that went almost forty pnds, so yeah ill say there is a real possability of coons weighing more. its getting to frequent of big coons run over on the road., its just like people hunting deer they may only 5 and 6 pointers but then they get a huge 12 pointer, so bigger animals are out there its a given i was fishing and caught a 13 pnd 11 oz bass and turned it lose 3 yrs later in the same pond a 9 yr old boy caught one that weighed over 14, if he had of recorded the weight with the twra, he would have had the tennesse record, so is theree bigger ones out there i say yes
. by the way i live in cleveland Tn.
IM 22 YEARS OLD I'VE COON HUNTED CLEVELAND TENNESSEE SINCE I WAS 9 YRS OLD AND THE BIGGEST COON I'VE EVER TREE'D WAS A 38 POUNDER... I'VE HEARD STORIES OF HUGE COONS BUT THE BIGGEST I'VE EVER SEEN WAS A 41 POUNDER... I DID TREE A OPPOSUM LAST WEEKEND THAT WEIGHED 39 POUNDS... BIGGEST DAYUM OPPOSSUM I'VE EVER SEEN OR HEARD ABOUT IN EASTERN TENNESSEE
Hi, My name is Chad, i live in southeastern ohio. Iv'e coon hunted for a long time. Iv'e never even heard of a coon gettin that big but i guess its possible in different places. I dont know what my dogs would do tryin to fight a coon bigger than 30 pounds. The biggest ive ever treed was a 25 pound boar coon, and it just about whipped the dogs. I hunt treeing walkers and black and tans. right now i have one hell of a dog named hatchet,he's one of the two walkers that i own. the other walker is too old to hunt anymore, he tries to hunt but he has a bad back.i have two black an tan pups that im training right now, their 7 monthes old and treeing and runnin with hatchet already, i hope that they might make grand night champion one day but you never know. Last night a pack of coyote's came in on the dogs while they were treed. if youve only got 1 or 2 dogs a pack will kill them if they can. when i heard the coyotes start screamin i grabbed the gun and ran into the woods. by the time i got to the dogs the coyotes had gone back in their den. im gonna go kill then all today, i know where the dens are. the biggest possum ive ever seen was about 22 pounds, i was out on the back roads one night haveing some fun kickin possums, thats were you go out and find possums in the road and keep your headlights on them then run out and kick the shit out of them. well this particular possum was a mean sumbitch! he absoluty ate my ass up! The stinky shithead climbed up my leg when i started kickin him. I dont know if you have ever had 22 pounds of pissed off possum crawling up your leg but let me tell you, it aint no fun! well im gettin ready to go out and tree my a big coon so im gonna go. e-mail me back somtime so we can swap some stories.
I am trying to train a 9 month old black and tan..He barks like crazy at cage coon and when he is has one shot down to him he is the last dog to go in..He always stays away from the business end of the coon,,he bites there hind quarters or tail, but after it is dead he goes for the belly area or neck. As I said earlier he barks at the cage coon but when the other dogs tree one he is around the tree but does not bark or put his feet on the tree. He has had only seen 3 coons in his life..This may be the reason. He hunts with one REALLY GOOD walker and one decent independent dog (another walker) He stays with the awesome one 90% of the time only once has he came back to me and not went back hunting till the next cast. Any help would be appreciated. ALSO ANY ONE EVER USE FOGGY TOP LIGHTS 21volt version?
The biggest coon that I have ever treed weighed 36 pounds. Here in Eastern Kentucky, a coon over 20 pounds is a "monster". I did however, see a pet coon at a trade day that weighed 76 pounds. It was just plain fat and could hardly get around. I guess they are like people, lots of food, little exercise, heavy weight.
I LIVE IN NORTHEASTERN NEBRASKA, I'VE BEEN HUNTING COONS SINCE I WAS 12, AND I'M ALMOST 18. I WOULD SAY THE AVERAGE SIZE RACCOONS AROUND HERE IN NEBRASKA IS ABOUT 20 TO 25 POUNDS. I WENT TO SANTEE, NEB AND CALLED IN ONE.... BANG... BANG....A DAMN 44 POUNDER COON, SO THAT'S MY BIGGEST SO FAR, BUT I'LL GET A 50 POUNDER SOMEDAY SOON!!
me and my buddy took my dogs out for the first time this year jan 4. we bagged a 46 pound boar coon with in 20 min after the cast. we chased forever. we traced across miles and miles of river swamp.when we findly got to the tree not only was our 46 pound coon was in the tree there was two more beside it. my buddy picked up his trusty firearm single shot 22 rifle. he shot the46 pound coon 18 times before he let go.we left the other two because we did not have any bullets left.
I have been hunting since I was 2 or 3, and here in Tennessee the biggest i have seen is 39 lbs. killed on bluff mtn. When I was 8 in nebraska, we killed one that was 56 lbs. and had it mounted, but it also stood about 2 1/2 feet tall. I would imagine that a 60 lb. coon would be almost unheard of. but i supose it could happen. A few days after we killed her, the farmer that owned the land we were hunting told us about a sal that had been there for a few years and he swore she had to be over 60lbs. we never got a glimpse of her though..
I have only been huntin in FL for a few months, but the guys i go huntin with have been coon huntin their whole life. They say they have seen some good sized ones but nuthin overly big, a few other guys that we talked to out in the woods said they got one that was 40 lbs. but i didnt see it, and the fur down here in FL is very thin too, i think the heat might have sumthin to do with them not fattening up as much as up North. Happy huntin.
\average coons here in east Tenn, 10 to 20 lbs. i killed a 25 plus this year, but when i was younger i went to nebraska and we killed one that went 48 lbs. and it stood knee high on all fours. there are big coons in michigan and canada

Puppies are expected in November 2001. UKC registrable, $500 each, will ship anywhere in the USA. All puppies start treeing squirrels, coons and other small game by age of 5-10 months (100%). When mature, they will go after big game, where available and bay moose, bear and wild boar. Great family dog and watch dog. Close range, fast silent chase and affectionate character make this dog the best choice for those who like a quiet and efficient hunting. I live near Buchanan, Virginia. All my dogs tree here on our 90 acres and beyond. I sell puppies to hunters only. Ask for references.
hope to meet you this tuesday to see the female puppy and its mother oh I am about 25 min from natural bridge and by looking on a Va map Iam not that far from you. again I will call you tuesday morning around 8 or 8.30 take care

Class of 5th grade is reading Where the Red Fern Grows.
The phrase "coon hunting contests" is used, but I've not found anything on the Internet to describe the "contest. Any help would be appreciated.
The book is refering to a competition where hunters get together for a coon hunt and have a scoring system based on which dog can tree a coon the best during the hunt. Usually hunters will gather at the clubhouse of the organization putting on the hunt where all hunters will be divided into 4 person "casts" or groups. The casts will then leave the clubhouse and go off to different destinations to turn their dogs loose in hopes of treeing a coon. When a dog barks, its handler needs to be able to recognize their dogs voice. From there it is a matter of the handler to tell the judge when their dog is running a coon and when it is treeing a coon. The dog with the most points wins the cast. The cast winner w/the most points wins the hunt.
I would recomend renting the movie after you read the book.

Your dog might be a silent trailer... that can be good if you want more fur. I preferred a semi-silent dog, only opened every so-often, just enough to let me know where she was. She was a running x treeing walker cross dog... fast. If we were hunting against another good dog(s)... she would check in even less... she would leave'm back in the cornfields... heheheh! I looked more for a change-over, some dogs don't bawl either... they just chop and ring-chop.
Hi, My husband and I just got a blue tick pup. She is about 8weeks old. When you put her in her pen she just keeps crying. What should I do? Let her stay in it and keep crying or what? Also when should you start training her? I am open for any suggestions on training her. This is new for us and we want to do the right thing in training her. Should we let her stay in her pen in the house or should we keep her outside. I have heard they need to be with you in the house in the beginning. Is this true?
HI, I HAVE SOME ADCISE ON GETTING HR TRAINED THE BEST WAY IS TO LET HER SEE A LIVE COON WITH ANOTHER DOG THAT IS TRAINED OR TURNED ON TO A COON. BUT SO FAR WITH HUNTING YOU SHOULD LET HER HUNT WITH ANOTHER DOG THAT IS TRAINED AND DOESN'T RUN ANY TRASH. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR DOGS THAT ARE STARTED THEN EMAIL ME BACK.I HAVE SOME OF THE BEST ONEY'S CUJO(OR RACKETTE)/WILLOW CREEK GOLDEN BUGLE DOGS ALIVE. IF YOU KNOW OR IF YOU KNOW SOMEBODY THAT REALLY KNOWS HUNTING HOUNDS THIS CROSS IS HARD TO FIND AND IS ALSO PROVEN.
All my dogs are silent trackers. They are not hound. This is the West Siberian Laika. Fast silent chase, close range, barking only at stopped and treed animal.
All start treeing naturally by age of 5-10 months (100% of them). They will tree hundreds of raccoons for you and will go after other small game, if needed.
A few months ago a friend of mine got a cur dog, she was around 8 or 9 weeks old when he got her, she cried night and day but he stayed persistant, he dosent believe in dogs comin in the house so the house was not an option. after a few(almost 3) weeks the whining stopped, i guess she figured out it wasnt doin any good. I dont know if it is the same with blue ticks, but my advice is to stay persistant and keep it outside, as long as u have a good enclosure where the dog can get away from rain and such it should be fine. good Luck, hope i helped.

Casey is a 3 year old, go hunting, track driving, accurate locating, pressure tree dog. She runs a track and locates with a high tenor mouth, then changes over to a chop. She is open spotted and easy to look at. She was trained in swamps, beaver ponds, cut-over timber, creek and river bottoms by real coonhunters. She is double Lipper and Bawling Barney bred out of a proven reproducer. A real meat dog that does it alone or with company. Never been laid-up having pups. Contact Tony Scott, Tyler, Texas. **903-526-4710** $1000 here.
Our UKC hunt attendance has fallen in the state of Texas. The Gilmer club (East Texas near Longview) has gone under. The Winnsboro Club is close. Is anyone else having these problems with their UKC clubs. If so, do you think you know what the problems are and are you willing to discuss them. Use your Cyber-name and let's talk! That's what these forums are for! Just for starters I'll throw out a reason some of the older hunters give: Too many blowing, fussy dogs being entered. Let's hear your input!
Joe, I noticed you have no entries on your message board and not very many in your forum. If you will change your message board to a classified board you will get more traffic on your site and also benefit more coonhunters. If anyone has training tips they can post and discuss them on the forum. The newest listings should be at the top. The same should apply to the Forum. The set-up that Coonhound Classifieds has is a good testimonial to the "newest listing first" format. I would be curious to know how many hits per day they average. Does anyone know? ET

I have a 5 year old walker. Last night he treed on two coons and when he gets a coon treed he will bark till you get there and when you get to the tree he will stop barking. He won't leave the tree but as soon as you walk away he will start barking again, and as soon as you get near the tree he will stop. Does anyone know how to fix the problem?
he wants you to shoot the coon i have a pheasant dog like that until you shoot it it wont leave if it has a coon treed and you cant see it have another coon you already shot and shoot in the tree and throw the already dead coon
Try talking to him at the tree, make him work it. I had that happen on young dogs once in awhile but generally doesn't last long. I used to tell my dogs to "talk-to-me" every so often while you are at home. Then do it on the tree... they know what you want. Also try hunting your dog with a more experienced dog for awhile... give your dog tutor so to speak, not that your dog isn't a good dog but this will help him, and one more thing... it creates competition.
I tptally agree with this gentlemen. You may try in season whenever you shoot one out to him tease the dawg with make him want it hang it in a little tree so it's just out of reach of tme dawg see how that works.latter
