irish ld!! (no login)
Hi! iM NOT EVEN too sure wat i want to say here but i'll try anyway.
First: Parts of this site, I think is wonderful. It shows so much support and love from MoST of the writers in this forum and i feel everyone appreciated you're thoughts raised. oF COURSE i am aware that this is an opinion area of the site. Yes of course it is and no one has the right to tell others what to do or say, or feel. And I won't either. But i must always mention ''if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all'' such a simple saying you may agree but so...soso true!
I came across so many horrible accounts people submitted and some very very admirable opinions that really inspired me and i have great respect for you all. Well, most of you anyway!! I was first introduced to the wonderful actor River Phoenix in the oh-so-brilliant movie 'stand by me' when i was 10 or 11. I loved it, it was my all time favourite film, and my all time favourite actor was the beautiful River. Now,im one of those people who knows who's at the top of the charts once in awhile or i know some new celebrity gossip but i amnt insanely glued to the celebrity life. Seeing i was just 3 at the time of river's death, i wasnt aware of his death at the age of 12. Now 14, for christmas i got stand y me on dvd which i was extremely pleased with as i hadnt seen it for years. now i just came in from the other room turned on the computer and thought id check up on the wonderful actor river. I searched on google came upon this site then all of a sudden my world stopped for a split second, i read on the site ''the death of river phoenix.'' To tell you the truth i could barely concentrate as i read it and then i saw the date, how he died in '93. I was horified seeing as i had just been txting my best friend saying how ''gorgeous'' river phoenix was. It made me feel so......bad. Then I read about the funeral, clicked on the photo of phoenix and really, i was not prepared for what i saw. Picture this: a relative of river clicks on the internet, wants to look up on their talented relative who so tragically died then stumbles upon this picture! It was a sick and cruel picture to post on the net. How could anyone stand behind that camera, face down upon that corpse and take such a picture. Im not here to critize but does that person have any single bone of human decency?? On his funeral day!! with family nearby!!
If people would like to reply to my message i would be ever grateful. i dont want to tell you what to say of course but please....please do not post any offensive messages, please be sensitive towards others. I wasnt River Phoenix's number one fan, i'll leave that up to his many loving relatives...but now you all no that....i am a fan...and he was and still is forever more my no.1 actor in my heart.
Goodbye friends!!

Thank you so very much for your beautiful words regarding River! I am River's Cousin, his Mother is my Aunt, and I grew up with him on the Commune in COG! I totally agree with what you said about a relative maybe wanting to do a search just to remmeber some things about River and coming upon ths site accidentely, as that is what happened to me a few months ago. It was so horrible for me as River and I were very close, and I hate that sites like this exist actually. I know it is wonderful when some say beautiful things about him but I just feel that they did not know him and should not talk about subjects that they are not familiar with.
There a many things that Fans do not know about that night and about River and the drug use, and the media does not always have all the facts right either. That is something that my family and I have kept to ourselves.
Thank you so much for your love and support!

I'm curious as to why you went ahead and clicked on the photo even when you knew it was going to be EXTREMELY graphic. What kind of message could they have put that would have made you realize that the image is very graphic?
It amazes me how people continue to say that they "stumbled" upon the photo. They didn't stumble upon it, they made a conscious decision to look at the coffin photo. It says "River was placed in a blue coffin (click to view the coffin - warning extremely graphic!!!!!!)" What would make someone think that it is NOT graphic? I don't understand. Enlighten me.
I have another question. Do you want your internet browsing to be censored? If so, what types of things should be off limits?
Those who know me from this board, know that I don't like the image and I don't understand why people want to look at it. But I will always fight for anyone's right to have uncensored access to it. And you should too.

Ok you asked ''why I clicked on it'' did u ever here of the word 'curiosity' ok u can say...yes i did know it was extremely graphic seeing that it was written dwn in black and white. u mite say that i shud hav stopped if i wasnt (which i wasnt) prepared 2 see wot i saw but let me tell u...it is hard!! Have u luked at the picture? have the majority of this forum looked at the picture? and its safe 2 say i believe that yes. Of course i understand not everyone may have looked at it but based on the messages i have read i think most ppl have seen the picture on this site. its hard to just scroll away frm these few words ''extremely graphic'' i did (for like 2 mins) but then when u read the uder msgs left by uder ppl it is very difficult. so an answer to ur question (though it is quite a stupid one really) is.......curiousity
we're just humans...afterall!!
ps. i neva sed i stumbled upon this site! plz read craefully!!

So...I'll ask you again. What shoudl they have put as the warning so that you would understand that it was very graphic? How could they have labeled it differently so that you would be prepared for what you saw?
You said yourself that people or relatives might be able to stumble upon the photo. You can't stumble upon it. You have to consciously click on it. If someone doesn't want to see the graphic pic, then don't click on it. It's that simple.
Another questions you didn't answer. Do you want your internet browsing to be censored?

No, i was just saying that its just knowing that that picture is there. Ok, yes the pic is labeled and a family member wudnt have to click on it. But when that family member clicks off the internet, wont thay always remember that there is an 'extremely graphic' pic of there dead relative displayed for all to see. They'll always know its there!! i just feel that wud be a horrible thing to think about! And yes, i knew the pic was graphic but those 2 words still didnt prepare me!
And i didnt reply to ur 3rd question cos i didnt really understand it. Im not getting my computer censored anytime soon. I mean its not everyday i click on a picture of a dead corpse!
ps. thanx 4 replyin so quickly!

i was one of the ones that did "stumble" on the image while researching for a class on american drugs policy. but i think even the warning placed on the photo is a bit of a problem. even though it does clearly state "extremely graphic" we have become pretty desensitized when it comes to images of death. entertainment is pretty graphic in its depiction of violence, so there is a sense that we have “seen it all before". for example, when the 9/11 attacks happened an people were watching the towers fall people stated that it was just like watching a movie.
these people who looked at the image after reading the disclaimer could have simply thought "i've seen worse on tv/movies" and thus found the picture to be far more graphic than expected. it certainly left an impression on me when i found it, and i have a pretty strong disposition.
the truth is jiggy jam, society is getting pretty sick, and i mean gratuitous shock value sick.

Ana, if you have become desensitized to "warnings", then what would you recommend they use to let you know when something is graphic. Should they put it in red? How about larger?
I think the following is what happened: You were curious about the warning, but you clicked on it anyway. You found it offensive and now you want to blame someone else for your curiosity.
You want them to take the picture down, but you know they won't. So there has to be some kind of warning label to let you know that the photo is graphic. What does the warning need to say to make you realize that you shouldn't look at it?
The photo is actually not very graphic. It is quite peaceful. You just have a hard time removing yourslef from the good things that you think River represented. If this were a photo of a generic person, you wouldn't have the same problem. in fact, I don't see you complaining about the Christ Farley photos on this site.

Graphic? Extremely graphic? You guys haven't even see graphic until you've scraped up enough brains and body parts from the road or walls after a train wreck or suicide.
The only "play on words" as far as the warning goes, is that "graphic" may interpret just a plain pic or .jpg depending on the language one speaks. Maybe a couple of extra words for non-English such as Achtung! Alto! Just a thought.

jiggy jam, you can believe what you like about me, i know how i came across the image and thats good enough for me.
my comment is based on my observations, both from my course and partially from my time in the states, and it can't escape many peoples attention that entertainment has become increasingly orientated around sex, drugs and gratuitous violence. and seeing as these images are becoming more frequent it is only natural that people become desensitized. for example; the health warnings on cigarettes are under heavy debate. though the big bold letters warning of the possible results of smoking proved to be initially successful in making people think twice before lighting up after a while the general populous became accustomed to seeing them and hence these types of warnings are no longer as effective. so to combat this the canadian approach of putting very very graphic images of the damage caused by smoking on the packs is being considered, however the main concern is that after some time even these images will not be effective.
like it or not the same principle applies to this photo. we are turning into a generation of smartasses who think we have "seen it all before"
and by the way icu, there is no way i could do your job. i have nothing but respect for those who put themselves through trauma day after day. my stepmother is heading one of the local victim support schemes and it is emotionally draining both for her and her volunteers.
eek gotta run, late for class

I remember that when I saw the link I thought they were going to post some picture of when his character died in a movie or something. I mean, I didn't expect for there to actually be pictures of him deceased becuase I didn't think people were that sick. I was curious to see which shot they would use and say he was "dead" in and then I clicked on it and I was in complete shock when I saw it. Why would people actually want to see that?
Anyway, I agree too that it should be taken down immediately.

Sammie....how could they have labeled that link to make you realize it was a graphic picture? Should they have made it larger? A different color? Maybe they should have worded it dirrently? Let us know what you think about how they should have labeled it differently.
You say " Anyway, I agree too that it should be taken down immediately." Do you really want your internet viewing habits to be controlled by someone else? Or would you rather be able to make viewing decisions by yourself?
Personally, I want to be able to make my own decisions as to what I want to see. If there is a site or a picture that I find objectionable I just won't visit it. Plain and simple. With proper labeling we can all surf the net by ourselves as responsible people. Making people take down sites that someone finds objectionable is not the answer. What would you say to the atheist who want all church web sites taken down. the atheist might find church sites objectionable. Ever think of that.

It is possible to just come across the photo!!
A few weeks ago I did a SEARCH for river phoenix images,
and along with with the many photos of him was the coffin
picture. I couldnt believe it was there. I tried it again a couple of
days later and it was no longer there. So yes Jiggy Jam, it is
possible to just stumble on to it.

Im not complaing just stating that the picure was there along with
many others, you had to click on it to enlarge it however it was clear
which picture it was and there was no warning!!

You know you guys seem like a bunch of old ladies!?
Yes it said the pic was extremely graphic, and when I clicked on it, I thought I could handle it!! Even the most dire warnings couldn't prepare you for that picture!! You read about him dying, you know how it happened, but seeing that picture makes it so final. I agree with the irish chick, whoever took that picture had a stone heart. Oh, a similar thing happened to me, I'm 13, and I first saw Stand By Me when I was 11 i think .... anyhow, i ranted and raved about him for weeks on end!! Then my da got his computer fixed and i looked him up on the net. I found out he'd died and it was like losing a friend. Iknow i never knew him, and RP must be fed up of people ranting on about their cuz, but he touched so many people, you feel like you knew him ...
so ladies, quit bitchin and knit me my quilt!!

C, I also agree that it is possible to stumble upon the pic of River deceased in his coffin. A few days ago,I watched one of his movies that I hadn't seen before, and it rekindled my interest in him from many years ago. So,I went to Google, typed in River Phoenix and clicked on images. As I'm sure you know,it brings up a page with 10,perhaps 20 pictures. You then have the option of clicking on a pic for a larger image. The coffin photo was the second pic at the very top. You couldn't help but see it. I was bothered by it, I'm not sure if I was bothered by the fact that it was River Phoenix dead or that it was a photo of an obviously dead person. It still gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it. So, anyway, like I said,I agree.

One AGAIN, it IS possible to just come across the photo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!On the shovelware.com site, the picture is in plain view. There is no warning, nothing to click on, the photo is there for all to see! Hopefuuly we will no longer have to read Jiggys arguments that is is not possible to just come acroos the photo, those who are visiting that site are not given a choice to view the photo!!! I think you have been proven sooooooooooo wrong Jiggy!!!!!

Oh my gosh. I got stand by me when I was 13. and I was only 2 when he died. When I seen him in stand by me I fell in love with him. Everything that happened to you is what happened to me. I went on line and so on.... I was so sad. I even cried. I know it's pitiful but I truly admire River still, so much talent and so young.

you know what. I bet if he wasn't so cute. We wouldn't have looked him up and we would of never found out he passed away! It's crazy.... How I cry because of his death!I think I need help! At least I can talk to you guys! Oh yea I think it is so crazy how in Stand by me ( I own it) At the end he disappers because he dies in there. It means so much more now then when it came out! I love the video cuz River is in it smiling. That is when he washappy. I bet he didn't know that was his last day alive. I wish I could have went back in time to tell him and save him!

Nope, I dont carry On Like that sorry! I agree with you a lot when yu say all that talent wasted, but we never got to see what kind of actor he would grow up to be, did we? Anyway, I just dont see the point of crying over someone you have never met and you call your role model, when he took drugs and died of a drug overdose!
