ok then i wont write in short hand, is this better? can you understand it? the point i was trying to make was that everyone tried drugs some time so no-one can blame him or call him a junkie

yes, people do experiment with drugs. however river did have a long term heroin addiction that was begining to affect his career and led on to cost him his life. you have to admit, that river was more than experimenting. junkie is an ugly word, but it is a word that is relevent to one with his habit.

yea i get what you're saying but as you said junkie is an ugly and harsh word to use its not really his fault that the drug abuse went that far i know so many people who are or have been addicted and i sort of know what its like trying to forget about them - trust me its not a nice thing to go through and thats just from what i've seen from other people i'd hate to go through it myself.

well from what i read it was one new drug that he tried that killed him and gave him the seizures and stuff so i suppose you're right because he should't have tried that new one in the first place - if only he could've stopped then maybe he would be here today

There is a difference between taking recreational drugs ( which i do on occasions ) and being a heroin addict.
People who take drugs know the risks, River was on a downward spiral. He was a great actor but also a junkie the same way Jim Morrison was a great singer but also a junkie and an alcoholic.
He was infamous in death.

you dont have a choice when it comes to drugs you try it once to see what the hype is then unfourtunatly it takes you over makes you different from who you really are i have first hand experience and have seen people do this to themselves why would you blame someone who died when they clearly didnt want to???????? you dont know who i am or how many times i met river but he is now resting can you not stop calling him a junkie and let him rest in peace??? you probably dont even know the meaning of the word. just shut up and judge your own life not somebody who has lost theirs.

"junkie is an ugly word, but it is a word that is relevent to one with his habit"
Go Ana! Here's a topic that hasn't been discussed for a while .... Fab, FYI - Junk has been a slang used for heroin as far back as I can remember (and I'm getting pretty old ). Thus, any user of the "Junk/Heroin" especially an addict, is deemed a "Junkie". As Ana said, it IS an ugly word, but in all honesty, no different than calling the pot smoker a "Pot Head". Of course it sounds bad in every respect - but until any of us see some good come from drug use, the term "Junkie" remains.

You talk like you knew River personally If that is so forgive if I say anything out of place
If you did not know him then how in the hell can you possibly know if he was a addict or not.
I know for a fact that River went through a lot of shit through his life. I am not saying that makes it right to use drugs because it doesn't. But it makes me more compassionate that he needed help and obviously no one cared enough to help him because he is gone
Have a little respect please and don't speak ill of the dead.

this is quite an interesting thread, not anything to do with the river stuff (after all we have been over it so many times). this tread has more to do with words, thier meanings, formations and origins. makes a nice change i feel.

I have to say this as someone whose been around (and ultimately lost a loved one) drugs. First, River was a "junkie" but so what? Why do people automatically look down on junkies? Don't get me wrong here, of course it's awful for a health stand point. But being a junkie doesn't mean that River, my brother, and those millions with an addiction aren't loving, talented, genuine people worthy of just as much respect as those without an addiction.

You said here " River was a "junkie" but so what? Why do people automatically look down on junkies?"
I think in Rivers case, it's because River made a spectacle of himself and the organizations he represented by a pure living eco-conscious lifestyle, only to be torn apart by drugs. It IS sad the way he died. No one denies that. But I think Jiggy has a better way of explaining it than I do. When someone such as River makes a lifestyle out of advertising his good causes and good deeds, only to die of an O.D. in the way that he did - let alone the amount of drugs in his system - it's a letdown in the worst way for fans or anyone who changes their lifestyle because a celebrity says they should.
Celebrities also have advantages that not many others do. A topic on another thread discusses the "country club" rehab center Joaquin entered. Those private rehab centers are beautiful. Luxurious even. But a state run facility that indurance may or may not cover is not so nice at all. And those state run facilities are what the rest of are left with mostly. Like i said - Jiggy can explain it better as he has done so in the past. I'm rambling .
I am so sorry for the loss of your brother. May I ask were you close? How old was he?

I havent tried drugs before, and I dont intend to either, OK?
River didnt just try drugs either, he was addicted, and it was the cause of his death, so that is what we are concerned about, not how many times people have tried drugs, what you do in your spare time is your buisness, but don't think for one minuit we will think higher of you for trying drugs, because it is in NO way cool, or anything close to that, it is a stupid suggestion if you consider it to be.
Fine, take drugs, end up like River did, If only we could help you, but please do your best not to do drugs, because another thing you should realise is that when people die of drug overdoses, it hurts a lot of people around them, so I suggest you stear in the other direction there!
Wether you are a celebrity or not, how much money you have,...watever...seriously, Im sure River wouldnt wanted to have ended up the way he did, and he didnt just experiment, he had a very serious addiction, and it shouldnt be dismissed just because he was your fave actor, if he was to set any examples for you, you would think it would be NOT to take drugs, so DONT!

hey ally, how's it going with you?
things my end have been pretty hectic, and i think it is probably going to be that way for a while.
i am not totally against shorthand, but there is a limit. i can't stand it when people assault language like that, it just shows that the person is uneducated and/or trying too hard to be cool. it's a little bit like someone scraping thier nails on a chalkboard for me.

glad to hear you are doing well sweetie!
stay sane. lets face it, i'm not likely to!

I think that regular drug users should be resigned to the fact that they will be called 'addicts' and 'junkies' - because this is in fact what they are.
If a paedophile gets offended being called that then SO WHAT - boo hoo cos thats what they are!
Im in no way comparing River's addiction to that of a pervert but the sad truth is that he was an addict, and with that comes the labelling of a 'junkie'.
I've tried drugs so I am not sitting on my high horse judging people (Im not saying those who have never tried drugs are doing that!)
I was also on a downward spiral for a year of my life and what really woke me up was when I realised that those labels were in fact true and I was not jus a recreational user.
Looking back I can say that YES I was a junkie...it's a horrible way to look at it but it is the truth.
People should not get offended by this phrase (although it is diffucult not to be). At the end of the day the saying goes
'the truth hurts'.

of course if your addicted you need help, but we honestly can't blame anyone else then rio because it's like if you find an animal struggling, you can give it water and food but you can't force it to drink and eat. He had to be the man and realize that they were helping him. I do wish he made the right choice and it hurts knowing he mad the wrong one!
