Hmmmmm - since I've seen so much of Rivers work, and not nearly as much for Joaquin, of course I'd have to say that River would be the better actor.
However ....
Gimme a chance to see Joaquins Johnny Cash movie. If his voice and guitar playing style is as good as the "Man in Black" and does Johnny justice - I just might change my mind .
*Hello .... I'm Johnny Cash*

Apples and oranges here. I think both men have (had) their very personal style. There's a definite similarity in the quiet strength they both show onscreen, but I have to say I appreciate both styles.

I know Juaquin will protray "Johnny Cash" as the Legend he was. Juaquin has played so many different roles that I know he will come on top. There is NO doubt in my mind that there is much more to Juaquin than what we have seen and I can't wait.

Well, joaquin may not make it much longer himself considering THIS is how he viewed his stint in alcohol rehab:
"Maybe my being wealthy had something to do with it, but, for me, rehab was a country club where I played bridge." Actor JOAQUIN PHOENIX recalls his recent rehab stint with fondness.
Yes - that's a pretty bold statement to make, especially for someone fresh out of rehab. But I wonder - where's the rest of the interview? I'm suspicious of most articles, and especially those who only give one liners like this one above. I'd be willing to bet there was more to Joaquins statement, but it just wasn't quoted.
Those rehabs btw ARE pretty nice - if you get to a good one . Chess is very common in rehab since it requires patience and quantitive thinking...something the "addict" needs to brush up on. Also - Joaquin was obviously in a private facility rehabilitation center. And they ARE like country clubs. Nice rec rooms, room service for your meals, round the clock counseling. It's all good. A helluva lot better than the state hospitals commonly used for drying out. Scary stuff thoe state run facilities. No nice furniture, an over-worked and underpaid staff, and not so nice meals either.
Handsome pic of Joaquin though

Here's a little insight into how Joaquin developed his alcohol problem from the same website:
------
PHOENIX TAKES ACTING AS HEAVY DRINKER CASH TOO FAR
JOAQUIN PHOENIX developed an alcohol dependency while filming his role as JOHNNY CASH in the new movie biopic WALK THE LINE.
Country singer Cash, who was a renowned drinker, prompted actor Phoenix into increasing his alcohol intake for a better portrayal of the character.
GLADIATOR star Phoenix, 30, realised his problem was getting out of control and in April (05) checked himself into a rehab clinic when filming was over.
He tells London magazine Time Out, "It was then that I became aware of my drinking. I wasn't an everyday drinker but didn't have anything else to do, anything to hold me down.
"I was leaning on alcohol to make me feel ok. That's what it really was."
Hasn't Joaquin ever heard of ACTING?? You know, make-believe pretending to be someone else?? Wow what a stupid thing to do. I suppose he really became an evil emperor in order to film Gladiator or really killed someone as practice for To Die For. (No jumping down my throat please -- it's called sarcasm! ) Same insipid line of thinking if you ask me -- to BECOME an alcoholic in order to play one in a movie. Gawd.

sounds similar to River who aparently started taking drugs for his role in MOPI. Sorry about my spelling of Joaquin. I personally think Joaquin is a better actor than River would have been but I prefer River if that makes sense.

Maybe this was an extreme form of "Method Acting". But, I'd guess Joaquin had "issues" before playing Mr. Cash. Maybe, probably. I don't know but, I feel that. In the famous words of Mr. Kurt Cobain "Oh well. Whatever. Nevermind." Anyhoo, I think Joaquin is truly amazing. Absolutely amazing. I certainly hope he either outruns or fights off his demons. Love that guy. Take care all.

In acting you have to become another person, and sometimes you get so tangled up in being the character that it leads you into other things. To play a role as a druggee, or whatever you have to have some kind of experience to accurately play the role. It maybe stupid but that is how its done.

joaquin has had many more years to act then River did, so we have obviously seen more, and I think they are two very differnet actors. River was very natural in his appproach I think, and Joaquin seems "darker" and he lives his roles. Not fair to compare I think, they are just two very different actors.

I understand what you're saying they are completely diferent, but so are alot of actors. I'm just asking if you guys think River would be as gooder actor. Nothing to do with their styles.

River was a great actor then, so I feel that if his life had continued, and he was still an actor, he would have been one of the hreats. I do feel that music would have become more of an interet to him after what I have read in the past, so we may have seen much more of him in music actually. WHO KNOWS, that is the sad part.

I have a split decision, one I wouldn't compare those two together because there brothers ,and there is only one river and one juaquin. And 2 I would chose juaquin because river was starting to do bad in his you could tell something was wrong and if he didn't od, he might of continued to do drugs and went downhill!

I have been giggling every now and then today - thinking about our old ghost RP - HEE! Last night there was special on American T.V. celebrating Johnny Cash, and Joaquin hosted the show. Every time the camera would show the audience - I kept looking for RP - Bahahahaha!
Just think if her game were still going on today (or we were still stringing her along ). She would probably claim to have escorted Joaquin to the show, and was sitting in the audience somewhere, or fighting off the paparazzi outside ...... BAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!

you know what chick? i was thinking the EXACT same thing! I could see it now,one of the reporters at the premiere having to cross over to another reporter because a fight has just broken out between a "member" of river's family and a "guy with a camera"-paparazzi! if "RP" is female,i could see a handbag being swung with the inevitable words (or something along the same lines) being shouted such as "hey you leave my cousin alone". and icu,if she was still here, she would probably say "hey guys did you see me on the show? i was ??? rows from the front". this stuff is priceless and has provided me with many laughs when i've really needed them. one of them being now as i haven't seen my boyfriend for a whole day and won't be seeing him until tomorrow because he has gone on a weekend away with his friends for his friend's girlfriend's birthday . You said earlier about joaquin hosting the show on johnny cash, why didn't he "keep it in the family" and have his cousin join him? the mind boggles!
xxx nat xxx

Your telling me! I have thought this same thing over and over! Bahahaha! Perhaps if RP could find a camera shot of a big palm of a hand in front of the camera, she would claim it as herself protecting her cousin. Tehehe! I too, have laughed my behind off at such thoughts! But hey - no kidding ... we just bought Motley Crue tickets, and are center stage - woooohooo! We're a few rows back, but that's no big deal.
In just a bit, I'm going to call the theater and reserve some tickets to "Walk the Line" tonite. It's been getting really good reviews here in the states. Even saying "Oscar worthy", so we will have to wait and see if it wins any. Best musical bio-pic ever, I have to say, was "Ray" in my opinion. If you haven't seen it - do so . It's very much worth it, and deserved every award it received. Especially Jamie Foxx for best actor. I swear there are some moments you can't tell the difference between Foxx and the man Ray Charles himself.

Just saw Walk the Line, Juaquin did a fantastic job. Jauquin is on top of his game. However, after watching this movie, I just began to miss River even more. I wanted to cry for the lost talent in that beautiful boy.
