I just wanted to respond to a post I read about how "selfish" River was and how if his girlfriend, friends, & family knew they would have helped. First, you're correct drug addicts are "selfish" but they can't help it because they are addicts. Second, they DID know. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. That's not to say they didn't love River but rather (and I'm speaking from experience here) they were niave to the fact drugs kill.
One more thing...to say he wouldn't have been thought of a beautiful today is not true. There are many actors (and ordinary people for that matter) who are looked up to and thought of as great beautiful people who are, surprise, JUNKIES!!!! They hide it well. Truth is you probably live by and work with junkies and don't even know it. It's a reality.

If you have known someone your entire life you would DEFINATELY notice a change in them.
Taking drugs results in drastic changes in a persons character and I'm also pretty sure his parents would have known. How could you not?

exactly, what Anthony from the chilli peppers, he was a junkie up until 2001 and he looks brilliant.
Junkies arent just skinny dirty looking people with spots and needles hanging out of their arms, they are doctors, lawyers, airline pilots.
My friend was a junkie who died 5 yrs ago, we noticed the difference and we tried to help but they have to want to help themselves. From an outsider to look at him he would have looked fine, kept a good job in IT and was always dressed in his suit.
Then on 6th June 2005, my friend found him slumped on the floor, dead, he had died alone.

I know you can't tell a junkie from their appearance (sometimes, but not always!) but you can certainly tell by their actions...especially if they have been around that person their entire life.

You cannot just look at aperson and say, "This is a junkie." That is really judging, and you can be very incorrect. I know a few cats that look "dirty" as hell, but very straight.
