I was reading that heart still lives in Florida and his dad in Costa Rica. John Phoenix is a very kind, generous man and alway's wanted the best for River away from Hollywood. John's opinion's i agree on.

Yeah last i read his dad does live in Costa Rica and he owns a veggan resturant and he just lies low which i don't blame him..when he told River to leave acting behind and come spend time with him i think he was making an attempt to save River..i just think the attempt came to late and that his dad should of stepped in sooner since his mom didn't want to help him get help..and i don't care what anyone says she of all people had to of known there was a (drug)problem going on but she chose not to aknowledge it..it comes down to the fact that the people that were supposed to have loved him chose to shut their eyes to the situation and weren't there in the end when River truely needed a real friend and a loving family......Did the word "INTERVENTION" ever cross their mind!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????

i agree! river had promised his dad he was going to retire after he had completed all his contracted movies (only a couple after dark blood) from what i read he was gonna move out to costa rica to live with him. dont really think he would have- there always would have been a better project- just another one of those "what if" things i guess. john and arlyn have seperated- i read that she splits her time between florida (rain) and new york (summer/joaquin) liberty moved to costa rica to help run johns restaurant for a while (thats where she met her husband! aw) they are now divorced:( god, how the hell do i retain all this shit! :p x

Yeah, everyone turned a blind eye when it was obvious he had a problem. Well, I didnt know but looking back at the interview with Flea they said he looks withdrawn..how sad.

I guess RP was supposed to spend some time with his dad to help with the vegan restaurant.

thank god for the last three posts. I'm fed up with people thinking that his mother was a saint, she was wearing rose tinted glasses and refused to believe the truth

"thank god for the last three posts. I'm fed up with people thinking that his mother was a saint, she was wearing rose tinted glasses and refused to believe the truth"

I agree, Nicola. She certainly seemed to have put a LOT of pressure on him over the years, and she refused to admit to River's drug use even after it was proven that he DIED of a massive drug overdose. That's not naive, that's just blatant denial of facts. I have to believe anyone who truly knew River knew he had serious drug problems. Hell, essentially everyone talks about it except his mom. And for those who were asking, I read somewhere that not only are River's parents divorced but his mom also remarried at some point. Don't know if she's still married or not. And his dad, John, apparently had an illegitimate child before his marriage to Arlyn whom he abandoned to run off with Arlyn. So it's fair to say both his parents made some "questionable" choices over the years. I have no idea what either person is like today, but Joaquin did take mom Arlyn to the Oscars with him last month so there's certainly no apparent bad blood with her. And Joaquin went to live with his dad for a while after River died, so he was tight with him at least until '95 when he came back to Hollywood (and very well may still be...John does seem to have chosen the secluded life after River's death, which explains why you don't hear about him). But Arlyn's life rarely makes the news either unless she is accompanying Joaquin to a premiere or awards show. I remember seeing a sweet picture a few months ago of Joaquin with both Arlyn and Liberty at a movie premiere. But on to something that bugs me.....

As for the story about John asking River to give up acting and move to Costa Rica to work with him at his restaurant--and River AGREEING to stop acting after he finished the movies he was already contracted to do--well, I've heard a conflicting story from a reputable source. I think it was on the River ep of "Dark Stars" on A&E (or one of his bios, but I feel certain it was this one), one of River's bandmates from Aleka's Attic was interviewed. This guy said that John had talked to River about his concerns over the effects Hollywood was having on him. BUT he said that John told River to think hard about what made him HAPPY in life--and that his music seemed to make him a lot happier than acting ever did. He suggested that if River's heart was truly with his music, that he should at least cut way back on acting and PURSUE HIS MUSIC. Not even necessarily quit acting forever. I think it was the same guy on this show who said River hated leaving the band behind for a few months to act (and he even flew them all to the set of one movie so they could keep making new songs), and River would even say to the band sometimes that he could either stay there with them and keep playing music or he could go to Hollywood for maybe 2-3 months and come home with $1 million for their living and music-making expenses. This guy NEVER said there was any talk of him leaving the U.S. to go to Costa Rica and leaving acting forever, just leaving acting to pursue his music more aggressively--but not necessarily exclusively since he liked being able to bring in the money on occasion. This makes a lot more sense than John asking River to give up acting for the restaurant biz in Costa Rica. And since it came from River's bandmate (and friend), it does seem to be a source you can trust. I think the story about River telling his dad that he had agreed to quit acting completely and move to Costa Rica just took on a life of its own after River died--mainly because people love those "what if" scenarios. I think John encouraging River to do what made him happy by devoting more time to his music is both more logical and more believable.

wow,
CAPITAL LETTERS IMPLY THAT YOU ARE SHOUTING, seems like you took the less logical, less believable story a little personally. i agree with all you said, have no doubt that was the way it went but unfortunatly rumours stick and i think people just like the whole 'aw, river phoenix was going to retire and live happily in the jungle, amongst nature, just like a true hippy should- if only he held on a little longer!' story. x

"CAPITAL LETTERS IMPLY THAT YOU ARE SHOUTING"

No, they indicate that I'm simply trying to emphasize certain words or phrases. If I had typed my entire post in all capital letters, then that would imply shouting (or stupidity in not knowing how to turn off the "caps lock" key ). I meant no harm. People put bits of their posts in caps all the time (no different from italics, bold, underlining, etc) when they want those parts to stand out. It's not yelling in those circumstances.

"seems like you took the less logical, less believable story a little personally"

Not remotely personally. That would be silly considering I never knew River. It just annoys me tremendously when people fall for stories without checking for facts to back them up, whether it's about River Phoenix or something as mundane as a brand of cereal. Nice to know someone out there believes what I said though and understands that the "River quitting acting and moving to the rain forests" story had little or no basis in reality and became the stuff of urban legends after his death.

River's mother is remarried and they still live in Flordia.

I have River's phone number from when he was alive. It's just kinda cool to know that THAT was his phone number. I also have all of his previous addresses...again just a fun fan thing.
