many congrats natalie! i have been feelin broody recently and your pic made it worse!! i think you should call the bump river regardless of sex- its a beautiful name! x

First of all, many congrats on the bump, i hope everything goes brilliant for you.
However, don't call the kid River, unless you want them to be bullied at school !!! Thats in the same league as calling your kid " Britney, Shakira, Lennon (after John) etc "

I think it's wrong to name a child after a celebrity like that, especially if it's a celebrity you're kind of obsessed with or have "worship" issues with lol (as A LOT of people here seem to). It just puts pressure on a kid, usually making them feel to some extent like you named them after someone because you want them to be like this person. (I'm working on my second psychology degree, so I know what I'm talking about.) Same as naming a kid after a relative. I hate to see people name their kids so-and-so jr. or the 3rd, 4th etc. Kids need their own identities. River of all people would probably agree with this, especially considering the pressure he had placed on him growing up. I'm sure he would never want another child to have undue pressure put on them like that. Also, it would seem to send mixed signals to a kid to name them after a celebrity who died of a massive drug OD. Still, congrats to you on your baby-to-be. Having a child is by far the most amazing part of life.
And yeah, I do practice what I preach. I made sure that my daughter was given her own unique name. It wasn't a family name or the name of any celebrity I like, but it is still a normal name...no Fire or Tree or Breeze or other comic book-sounding stuff.

Well good for you. What do you want? An Award? As for "comic book sounding stuff" that is rude and just your opinion. It is possible for people to choose the name River simply because they like it.And as for not naming kids after relatives because they "need their own identity". Well, like it our not you will always be linked with your parents or sibs or whomever. How many times have you heard, "Oh, you're so and so's kid" or "you're so and so's brother"? It happened regardless of whether or not you have the same name.
Scoring disabled. You must be logged in to score posts.
Nope, not at all. What's the difference in two people posting that they ARE going to name their kids after a celebrity and my posting that I didn't? Nothing. So if you jump down my throat you should jump down theirs too. Or else let my post go just as you did theirs. My post was simply about naming my child, just like theirs were.
"As for "comic book sounding stuff" that is rude and just your opinion."
Of course it's just my opinion, just as it's yours that my comment was rude. I just threw out some names. I have every right to post my opinions here, just as you do and everyone else does. Besides, I thought the "wink" at the end of my post would have clued you in to the fact that no harm was meant by my comments. Instead you seem to have taken every word I said very personally for some reason.
"It is possible for people to choose the name River simply because they like it."
Never said it wasn't. But keep in mind that this is a River Phoenix message board and both posters are avid fans of River (just read their other posts to understand that). So one just has to connect the dots to conclude that they're naming their kids after a celebrity they admire.
"And as for not naming kids after relatives because they "need their own identity". Well, like it our not you will always be linked with your parents or sibs or whomever. How many times have you heard, "Oh, you're so and so's kid" or "you're so and so's brother"? It happened regardless of whether or not you have the same name."
Since you called me on it, here's my explanation/defense of what I said. Of course you're connected to your family members in a lot of ways. I never said you weren't. But looking like your mom or having mannerisms like your sister or being referred to as so-and-so's little brother is not at all the same as being linked by a shared name. Naming a child after someone, family or celebrity, imposes a different kind of link on them. Studies have indeed shown that children named after someone do quite often feel like they have pressure on them to "live up to" the name in some way since it was typically the name of someone their parent/s admired. Whatever inspired the admiration (i.e. being very religious/ studious/ smart/ wealthy/ attractive/ gregarious/ generous) is often a quality the child feels their parent/s must want them to possess as well. Since someone else mentioned John Lennon, you can use his example and say that a child named after him might feel pressure to be a musician, peace activist, etc. Speaking of which, it really is odd how this other person advocated against naming a child River or after other celebrities (because they would likely be ridiculed I believe), and you ignored their post but jumped all over mine. I meant no harm, and I offered sincere congratulations to the one who has a baby on the way. I was merely voicing my opinion, just as you and others do on these boards all the time. Again I ask, what's the difference? Logically speaking there should be none.

"Well at the end of the day, it's my child and I will name it what I wish - and that is River for a boy"
Again, congrats and best wishes to you. Having a baby is truly the most awe-inspiring event of a person's life, followed only by the joys of raising that child. Enjoy every second of it.

wow....are we reading a bit too deeply into the name stuff or what!
well nat, at least you can tell your kid he sturred up a debate on the internet before he was even born (or named for that matter- might be a girl!) xx
Scoring disabled. You must be logged in to score posts.
If I have a girl she will be called Angel and I for sure will tell it that when he/she was in mummy's tummy that it caused quite a stir! I think River is a lovely name for a boy and it'll be named after a very kind-hearted great actor
I worry about some of you lot on here, Nat is naming her baby after a kind hearted actor ??? a kind hearted actor with a serious drug problem who od'd is more like the truth.
Some of you need to get into teh real world and get out of airy fairy land. For instance if i had a little baby boy and named his Liam after Liam Gallagher from Oasis and said that he was named after a generous kind hearted beautiful rock singer, what would you all say ?
(actually some of our non uk river fans may not know who liam is )
Scoring disabled. You must be logged in to score posts.
nicola, i think your being unfair- natalie has said she LIKES the name, it is irrelivant who it belongs too, im more than sure if River had been called egamennon, farquar, shitheap or something else repusive she would concider other options. it just so happens that someone who had a profound influence on her also has a name she thinks is beautiful.
as for the kid being bullied- have you heard some kids names recently?- he will be sat in class next to apple, layke and racer!
no one is in "airy fairy land" - a name is a name. you think this kid will turn out to be something differnt if he is named "john" instead of after a "actor with a serious drug problem"?
if you named your child after liam gallagher id say - liam is a nice name, but lets not kid ourselves..no one would say "because he is generous, kind and beautiful"- people say THOSE things about river because they are true.
Scoring disabled. You must be logged in to score posts.
How do you know that Liam Gallagher isn't kind and generous and beautiful ? Okay I think he's beautiful but thats a matter of opinion.
Do you know about the amount of donations and gigs he participates in for charities ? Like the Teenage Cancer Trust ? He just doesnt bleat on about it in public.
I've met him twice and he was nothing but nice to me and spent 10 minutes or so with me and my husband when we were in New York to see him. And he remembered how i was from when he boarded one of my flights at Glasgow airport.
And to his credit, he doesn't lie about his drug use ( or past drug use ) he admits to getting wasted, may be if river was a little more honest about his drug use he would still be here today.
So i think you are being a little harsh and unfair, hmmm ?

"How do you know that Liam Gallagher isn't kind and generous and beautiful ? Okay I think he's beautiful but thats a matter of opinion."
Nicola, I still wouldn't name a kid Liam though. Why not go with Noel instead since he's the bloke who actually wrote the songs Liam sang? Totally joking with ya - you know, the frequent battles between Liam and Noel. I love Oasis, and it's cool to hear all the great stuff Liam does. Didn't know it.

i ment i cant imagine of anyone saying- "i named my child after liam gallagher BECAUSE he is kind, generous and beautiful"
hardly the first descriptions that jump to mind when you think of him, his charity work isn't one of the most talked about things in his career, it was so with river, as you said : "he doesn't bleet on about it in the public" guess thats why i didnt know he did any.
one of the most talked about things in his career is, however, his arrogance, severe lack of cooperation with everyone (especially his bro) being nasty to his fans alot of the time and generally being a "hard nut".
he doesn't have to lie about his drug use- it wont ruin his career if he says "i smoke dope and do coke" he is a rock star therefore the criteria is different, it is expected and not at all shocking (sad but true).
dont think im being harsh and unfair- im sure he can be nice, im talking about overall general public perception and we were talking bout people naming kids after people. if you wanted someone kind, generous and beautiful- im just saying liam wouldn't automatically spring to mind! x

River has done wonderful things in his life, thank God. He was an inspiration for even more people, choosing to share his blessed talent and beliefs to us. I'm not making him undeserved poetry, so to say. I believe it's very unfair from you to reduce him to the one mistake that cost him his life, which is more than enough, don't you think? I guess your judgement really brings us to the "real world"... Naming their babies after River (which is a very beutiful name anyway) shows respect for a wonderful person whom we admire, not for the one side that showed he was not perfect. None of us are. I'm not making excuses for anybody. It's just like that: none of us are.
Rest in peace, Rio!!!

Nicola.. nah sounds like vodka. a drunk.

Colleen, i'm very sorry that i sicken you. I was just stating a fact that i think people who name their kids names like Blaze etc try too hard to be cool and it really is just asking to be bullied at school. I certainly didn't start slating your name or anything like that but you started saying i sound like a vodka / drunk. Thats your opinion i guess but blame my parents for that, it was their desicion.
Anyway, good luck with conceiving blaze, storm, thunder or whatever you are calling your child.

Sorry, LOL, couldn't resist. (BTW, I happen to like the name Nicola. And I like the fact that you're one of the few around here who try to keep people grounded in facts instead of fiction. Try being the operative word. )

I am a massive Liam Gallagher fan but i am the first to admit that he can be a bit of an ar5ehole, arrogant and he does take drugs but at least he's honest about it. He doesn't profess to be a saint.
Unlike the Saint River Phoenix ( Patron Saint Of Everything Good and Kind to Gods Creatures and Mother Earth ) crew on here !!!

Yeah, I knew all that about him, but it's nice to know he does the good stuff too. And like you said, at least he's honest. Have you ever seen the documentary "Live Forever"? It's about the rise of Brit-pop in the early 90s, and they focus on Oasis (obviously from the title). I've only seen it on satellite once, some movie channel. I missed the beginning but what I did see was great, especially all the interviews. I hope I can catch it again sometime. I think you'd like it too.
Oh, I know I named vodkas earlier, but I wanted to make it clear that I don't drink. I don't have a perfect history by any means, but I haven't had a drink in years and don't touch drugs. I have not only myself but my daughter to think of. Just wanted to clarify. *Peace.*

WOW, now that is some Oasis-lovin'! I've never seen them in concert, and living in the US I've had less of a chance. Love their music though. It's SO cool you got to meet Liam twice!! It really is nice to hear about this "other" side of him. People tend to only publicize the negative. Thanks.

He is so nice in real life, i first met him in Glasgow airport when i used to work there and then we met him him in Greenwich Village in NY, we were there to see Oasis play Madison Square Garden and he stopped us in the street and asked my husband where he bought his shoes !!!
When we told him that we were in NY to see Oasis, he seemed quite chuffed and chatted for about 10 minutes or so. I was ready to pee myself with excitement. Such a nice guy and so unlike the way media portray him.
Although, i dont wear them rose tinted glasses so i'm sure he can be a complete arse on occasions !!!

You don't?? I thought those were a requirement for these boards!

I don't think ive ever been called normal either !!! But we're " normal " to us !!!
My husband shoes were Adidas Spezial trainers but you cant really get them in shops in the UK. It was a brilliant day, good fun, we had a good laugh. My husband says to him " you know my wife would leave me for you ? " and we were all joking that it could be arranged...... well i wasnt joking !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, i'm a realist !!! My friend died due to drug abuse, not an OD but his organs failed due to drug abuse. He was the most fantastic person ever but towards the end it was so sad, he was a junkie, i admit that and thats why i cant stand all this " River is god and he wasnt a junkie " crap. Some people like that need a good shake and told to get in the real world !!!
**** Weird fact, my friend that died, he died on 06/06/00 so this year was his 6th anniverary on 06/06/06, spooky !!!

LMAO! OMG Nicola, you have a reeeeally understanding husband!! It also sounds like Liam might have been interested! LOL, that's just too funny. Sounds like a wonderful experience. I'm so glad you got to meet him and have a real (very interesting!) conversation with him. So cool.
I'm really sorry about what happened to your friend 6 years ago. I've been there with friends with drug problems too, and I lost someone I cared a lot about to the damn things back in my first semester in college. We had dated when I was in high school (he was older), and he died of an accidental heroin OD. I was devastated--and p*ssed. His death has definitely kept me grounded, which is why I can't stand when people on here defend River's drug use. Same as you. Drug use is inexcusable. People around here need to accept reality. I like that YOU do. And the fact you're an Oasis/LIAM fan is great too! Take care!

can we get back on topic please? if you want to talk about shoes then make your own thread - don't ruin this one. We have decided that if we have a boy he is going to be called Lennon and not River. Paul decided that he doesn't like the name River so we both agreed on Lennon
LOL! oh nat..seems you have actually, unintentionally, related the "liam gallagher" posts above directly to your thread- he has a son called "lennon"!....never mind!
p.s- nice choice, i love that name x
