Saucey Evening

I just love babies that have an abundance of talent but have no clue about what they're doing out there. It's one of the things that makes 2yos going into Saratoga and Del Mar so much fun.

I didn't save my Form for today, and I'm kicking myself for it. Now, I can't remember the details on this filly. I just know that she's a little unusual, being a Cal-bred trained by Graham Motion that won her first start on the grass and then was shipped out here to her home state to run in a restricted stakes.

Saucey Evening has an interesting pedigree. She comes from the Halo sireline through her sire More Than Ready, but the Cal-bred connection happens through her dam, who is a full sister to our lovable "Generally Challenged"......i.e. General Challenge. Also, her third dam, the Northern Dancer mare Northern Sea, is also the dam of her grandsire Southern Halo.......3X3 Distaff inbreeding.

("Generally Challenged",btw, earned a paltry 2.7M in his career.....pretty good for a kind of flaky horse that was allergic to airplanes!)

Anyway, back to Saucey Evening. She ran second to last today until turning for home. Garret must have known that she wasn't one to take to the inside (the hell with saving ground), so he took her about 8-wide instead. She closed like a maniac, and she was probably lucky that she was clear enough through the stretch because she was all over the place! The wire came too soon, and she was a half-length shy.

Saucey Evening wasn't exactly a secret. I think she went off at something like 4/1 (haven't looked at the chart), but chances are she'll be shorter next time.....I'm just interested in seeing where she shows up next.

One other thing......in the warm-ups Saucey Evening looked like a really immature horse, from a purely physical perspective. She had an almost "foalish" look about her. Given the way she ran, albeit greener than a leprechuan's waistcoat, I think she's a major stable mail candidate, and she really could be any kind.
