I learned something today......

All of us should be prepared to learn something every day that we play.

My lesson today is: Don't be so dogmatic about a trainer's workout pattern that you forget who the trainer is! DUH!

In the Wickerr Hcp today at DMR, I really did like One Union, and at a really nice price. But he was second off the lay in a mile turf race, and there wasn't one 7 furlong work on his recent resume. I thought, what's up with this? Papa M ALWAYS works his horses 7f at least once going into a mile turf race. I didn't like that at all.

One Union wins the race at something like 8-1! I was "so dogmatic about workout patterns that I forgot who the trainer WAS!" Shame on me!

By the way, that race, the Wickerr, was one of those races that manage to remind you of what this game's all about. There were about 7 horses on the wire or thereabouts, and One Union led all the way in and-change splits of 23, 46, 1:10.....got collared at the 16th pole between horses, and just refused to let them by. Awesome Gem closed furiously on the outside, and everytime I saw the replays, slo-mo or otherwise, I could have sworn that Awesome Gem nailed the wire. The photo said otherwise.

7 horses in a mile thoroughbred race within no more than a half-length of each other!

Another by the way, once I got off of One Union, I opted out of the race (at least I didn't bet against him). I could make a case to varying degrees for any horse in the race, and that's hard for a win-bettor like me. I stayed out, but seeing that 8-1 go out the window just because of my stupidity was pretty awful!

Ahhh, the lessons we learn....

The 8th at Del Mar, 7/25.....watch it. It's somethin'!
