The news hit me like a shot to the solar plexus. As one who grew up and came of age as John and the Beatles hit the world stage, it's tough to describe the impact.
I remember in the week before they made the first Ed Sullivan appearance, all radio was filled with the Beatles, WLS in Chicago used to release their new Silver Dollar survey of the top 30 each Friday. I recall being ambivalent about whether I wanted the Beatles to go to #1 and displace homegrown Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" as my 11 year old brain saw it as a matter of national pride. Then came the Sullivan show and as my sister and I sat transfixed staring at the tube- I was hooked forever.
