Many of the toughest jobs at the race track
are behide the scenes... in the barns... on "The Backstretch."

Garret Gomez was injured yesterday in the paddock when his mount, Silver Summation, reared and flipped over, throwing him in the process. Gomez fractured his left heel and may need surgery. Silver Summation was reportedly uninjured in this mess.

I always thought I would like to try this but after seeing it from this angle I think I'll just watch from the bar.

Speakin of tough jobs at the track....

I've noticed quite a phenomenon on the SoCal circuit.....meet after meet, year after year, the same faces show up to work every day. The same guy in the parking lot, the same lady serving hot dogs, the same bartender, the same guy selling the forms, the same mutual tellers (even the ones that try and keep your coins) etc.

I'd be willing to bet that they all have 20+ years seniority in their positions, is it like that in other states as well?

And when OTB's were first introduced the same thing has happened at those venues in Ventura, Bakersfield, Santa Maria etc.

Gotta be for the love of the job/atmosphere, can't be the money can it?
