How did everyone do?

Back to back exactas in the Distaff and Turf got me ahead for the day but otherwise pretty frustrating. I have Street Sense and Miesque's Approval on my tickets but lack the second place horse in each. Oh if Badge of Silver holds on to second it is a very good day. I thought it was a little quirky today with the rail and all. Invasor ran a good one - the time was only 2:02 and change. The only logical horse to beat Bernie did and a logical well touted play comes in third and I have no piece of that tri - stupid!!! I am thankful to come out with a small profit and hipe the rest of you cashed large!!

Well Tex based on how quiet things are post BC on UIC I'd say that everyone is a little shell-shocked by the events of their day, myself included.
Got to learn to expect the unexpected a bit better, and avoid the obvious.BC day is the ultimate money making opportunity of the year with all those juicy pay-offs just begging to be hit.[Just an example Juvie Fillies super with $7.20 fave Dreaming of Anna + 2 Pletchers 2,3 pays 13K,yet Colts super with 30+ Street Sense on top only returns 3 and change?].
It sure would be nice to hit a Pick 6 one day that pays 1.45 million for a deuce.Personally I'm going to structure my whole next horse betting year[BC resolution?] towards the Breeders Cup as hitting some major payoffs that are not routinely available otherwise should be the point of all the rest IMO.
Good to hear that Tex saved his bacon, and he brings up a good question. How did everyone do,and what opinions and thoughts does the BC aftermath bring to mind?

Pine Island and Fleet Indian put a huge damper on the day though the latter's injury is not life threatening.

I ended up on the plus side after digging myself a huge hole in the Juvenile Fillies. Went for the home run with Quick Little Miss and struck out big time. Went deeper into the hole with the Colts and hit bottom in the F&M when despite having the 1st four I somehow managed to f&^k the bet up. Sprint was nowhere and was placed on life support.

Miesque's Approval, small win/place breathed some life into an otherwise near comatose zombie. A little larger win/place bet on Round Pond and they took me off life support though still in serious condition. Win/place on Better Talk Now and the exacta with Red Rocks puts me well into the black. Gambled that Invasor would not get a trip from the 11 hole the way the track was playing and ran 2-3 in the Classic.

Big loser 1st part of the day but closed out strong.

"Big loser 1st part of the day but closed out strong......:

Ditto.

Feel fortunate to have gotten out, but, oh, what a day it could have been. Cotton Blossum up for second in the JF would have been a solid exacta. Five deep in the Sprint for the pick three and to Henny for the pick four. Friendly Island underneath eight horses for the exacta, but not Thor. Sniffed out the Mile as a longshot race and failed to use Miesque's Approval, despite the support for him here. Finally had a good thought on Round Pond. Ended up keying Red Rocks and closed out the pick three with Invasor. Needed Premium Tap up for second for the tri and the exacta but sub-par Bernardini outfinished him for the place.

Saver bets carried me all day long. 3 win bets, 1 place, 3 exactas and 1 trifecta and barely made a profit. I never bet so much on 8 races in a row. Took a bath in Juv. Fillies, F&M Turf, Sprint and big in Turf. $20 win on Street Sense(saver) and $4 exacta in Juvy made up for blank in Fillies, 10 WP on Miesque's Approval(saver) and $4 exacta in Mile made up for Sprint whitewash. Bet $512 in Distaff, $350 of it on Piney every which way possible, and cashed for $595(+83) because of $10 win bet on Round Pond(saver) and $2 ex/boxing of all the horses I used with Piney thanks to the disq. of Asi Siempre. Hurricane Run hurt me big. What a dog performance. I hit the tri in the Classic keying Bernie with 1,2,6,7,and 11 in all three slots. None of my top picks won today. I think I have the right concept with betting multiple horses to win and exacta boxing. There's way too much value on BC day to key in on 1 horse in any race. Just needed some more luck, despite the Distaff loss then win. Be at Monmouth next year. Peace until next time.

Re: How did everyone do?

November 4 2006, 11:26 PM

Pine Island (RIP) breaking down really put a huge damper on this day for me. I'm a big fan of Shug and the Phipps family. Classy people. They've done so much for the game and my heart goes out to them for what they must be going through right now.

Pine Island seemed all along like another great filly to don the black silks and cherry cap. She wasn't the prettiest looking thing, but the way she carried her head low and would dig in late was a beautiful sight to see. Head down, dig in, and fight to the wire. The epitomy of a racehorse. Very unfortunate what happened with her today. RIP girl.

Fleet Indian getting hurt also put a damper on the day. Luckily her injury was not life threatening. It's been a bad year as it relates to horse injuries, both career and life threatening. Enough is enough.

I spent the day at the Meadowlands in one of the track's restaurants named Terraces with my pops. Can't put a price on that. The buffet was good and the drinks were flowing (probably a bit too much at times lol).

As far as dollars and cents go, a win bet on Red Rocks dug me out a bit as nothing else clicked throughout the day. Didn't love him or anything like that. I was 4 deep in the late pick 3 and he was the only one that was an overlay of the 4 for me personally. So I jumped on it and got lucky. Nothing more, nothing less.

Was live in the late pick 3 to Premium Tap. Obviously that would be the time for the inside speed bias to come to an end on the win end. Got a little thrill out of it, but it was apparent that he wasn't going by Bernardini, let alone Invasor.

Silent Name gave me a big thrill in the Mile even though I knew I was in trouble after that opening 1/2 mile.

Ended up down a minimal amount on the day. Could have been worse.

Random thoughts:

- Ouija Board is awesome. That about says it all.

- Hey Churchill, please get your track straightened out on race day. From a fan perspective, I don't want to see certain horses running styles compromised when these races are supposed to pit the best of the best against each other. Not to take anything away from the winners, but it was apparent that some of their competition would be up against it. The bettor in me loves a good ol' bias. The fan in me doesn't, especially on BC day.

- I'm not going to get too rough on Mr. Denman, but watch the replay of the Juvenile and the Distaff stretch run if possible.

In the Juvy, he is giving Circular Quay a huge call. That's all well and good, but Street Sense was kicking about 6 clear on the rail.

In the stretch run of the Distaff, Round Pond kicked clear from you guessed it, the rail. Trevor's giving Balletto the call as if she's gonna run her down. C'mon buddy.

It was his first BC so I'm not going to get on him too hard, but I found those two stretch calls a bit strange.

Hope many cashed big and had some fun. The road to the Triple Crown starts... Now...

Re: How did everyone do?

November 4 2006, 11:26 PM

Savers saved the day for me as well. After going stone cold for the first four races on the card (counting the two minor stakes), I finally cashed a small superfecta with Ouija Board. Blanked in the Sprint and the Mile. Finally acknowledged the inside rail bias and bet $10 to win on Round Pond. Finally broke through in the Turf with a trifecta that I pieced together while I'm standing in line to bet win/place on Scorpion. That $1250 saved the day for me and got me into the win column, although I blew quite a bit on Premium Tap in the Classic.

Didn't get the life changing score that I was hoping for. But, still had fun.

However, the Cup always leaves me frustrated nowadays. It's not as fulfilling as it was in the late 80's. To my knowledge, every race except one was by daylight except for Invasor's one length victory in the Classic. Where are the thrilling blanket finishes? Most of these races were over at the 3/16 pole.

And how many championships were really decided today? Dreaming of Anna...2yo filly champ and Invasor is horse of the year...but after that? Street Sense, Round Pond, Miesque's Approval, Red Rocks, and Thor's Echo have not necessarily done enough to win Eclipse Awards?

"I'm not going to get too rough on Mr. Denman, but watch the replay of the Juvenile and the Distaff stretch run if possible."

Surprisingly, Trevor was awful today, and not it just those two egregious instances. I have to check the tape, but I swear he called the Mile winner "Mystiques's Approval" at one point.

Moreover, the calls sounded like any day at Santa Anita to me. Durkin had a way of injecting some drama into the calls that was conspicuously missing today.

100% agree. I didn't want to go on and on and make it seem like I was picking on the guy. That is why I left it alone after my Juvenile and Distaff reference.

I'm pretty sure you're spot on with "Mystique's Approval" as well. It at least sounded along those lines.

I'm sure he was pretty nervous calling his first BC. He's gotta be thankful it's over.

Trevor's never called a card with so much talent. Was mistake prone today by focussing on the race favorite too much, but I won't hold it against him. Durkin's my man, but I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. Trevor's a great race caller. He'll make up for it next year.

I made a few bucks on the day. Started out with the early pick 3 as I singled Anna with 7x3. Used Street Sense thanks to this board and it paid $384. The only other ticket I cashed was a nice win bet on Round Pond (my bomb of the day). Played a late pick 3, Round Pond/all/Bernardini and thought I was gold, but I guess it wasn't meant to ne.

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 6:46 AM

I had my best BC ever.
All of my last minute moves paid off well.
STREET SENSE,ROUND POND and INVASOR keyed me to success in pik 3, exactas and win wagers.
I did use DREAMING OF ANNA in a pair if pik 3s and a tri key saver.
The dq gave me a great exacta twice. I nailed the last race winner, exacta, late double 4 times and the late pik 3(just missed the late bomb pik 4).
I came over to the OUIJA BOARD side, and that single keyed mor success.

THOR'S ECHO and MIESQUE'S APPROVAL were my only expensive wipe-out races.

Sorry to redboard, but this was my best day ever without a pik 6 winner.

This board and a Fri.night group session did wonders for me, and I am anxious to compare success stories with my Fri.night partners.

My day was so good, it might be time to quit the ponies for a long while.
It all finally paid off big time.

Thanks for all the help and great opinions!

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 7:23 AM

I started out well with the P3 ending with the Juve fillies but as a Pick 3 player I couldn't string together 3 after that. Was live to Bernardini for 768 in the Classic and you all saw that one. Did have the exacta as a saver as well as a healthy place bet on Bernardini. My mistake was thinking Bernardini had it sown up with Invasor being out for so long. I could easliy have had the closing tri by hedging with Invasor in top (I had 3-11 with Premium Tap in the 3rd spot) but I got greedy.

If Henny won I'd had had a great day but...

Good races, lots of longshots as usual but the rail bias made some winners look like superstars which of course they aren't.

I agree that Denman was mostly misleading. Maybe he's lost his edge by calling all those 4 horse fields out in SoCal. 14 horse fields are a little tougher.

As Columbo would say, just one more thing. Did anybody catch Jerry Bailey's comment about the unexplicable "magical reason" that Miesque's Approval has run so well this year for Wolfson when he was trained by one of the best (Mott) before? My mistake on that one. I usually play the "supertrainers" because it makes fiscal sense.

Bling did not sparkle... and Bernardini ran second.
That $768 pick3 to 'dini was going to be so lovely, too.
Thought 'for sure, for sure' at the top of the stretch...

then, INVASOR came a-runnin'!

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 8:58 AM

I got crushed the first four races, and I surged with good scores in the last 4. Had exactas in all, the Tri in the Classic, and WP's as well. Red Rocks and Invasor were my top picks in each race and when you have that type of good fortune, lots of things will go right with the other bets.

Miesque's was a good consensus play at the table, and I'll be honest, I would not have had Round Pond if it wasn't for Big Daddy, but my single of her in the exacta with the 12, 13, and 14 allowed me to not sweat out the objection.

I know Dudley and the Large Father had positive days as well.

We had a great day and it was good to spend time with those mugs again, but it's a shame our G Juvy play didn't come through...we just never got Street Sense on the ticket.

Hit first race and waited 'til the last 3 -- good day cash wise but Distaff/Denman/Coverage had me switching to football toooooooo often. I feel terrible that we lost Pine Island and hope Fleet Indian pulls through(looks Good).

Was Denman drunk when he called the first 2 races ?
His calls did improve after he settled - Seemed like ESPN was always in a commercial after the first race.

Very touching seen in W Circle after Juv Fillies with owner naming Dreaming of Anna after his late sister. - Greg

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 9:58 AM

Coulda been better, coulda been worse:

JF--missed the race running errands, which saved me money.

J-Caught the exacta for a nice payoff. Missed the win and the tri when my boy Principle Secret looked like he hit a wall on the turn. I'm guessing he bled. Street Sense looked like a monster, didn't he?Ideal trip, golden rail and all that, but he beat some nice ones easily. Next spring will be interesting.

F&M Trf--Caught the small exacta, but missed a bunch of other bets, for a net loss. What a wonderful horse Ouija Board is.

Sprint--Went deep, got hosed.

Mile--See "Sprint"

Distaff--Not only was this a tragic race, but I got DQ'd out of a $10e exacta when they took down Asi Siempre. Cost me about $1800, I reckon. It looked like Asi Siempre's jock tried at least three different holes before he took her wide and ran into Balletto (who was also on my ticket!) I don't think she would have caught Round Pond if she got through, but it would have been close. Instead, she compromised herself and my other horse, giving second to Happy Ticket, who I did not have. Arrrrgh!

Turf--took a beating. Not even a sniff.

Classic--caught the tri a couple of times for a big finish. Too bad for me that they didn't allow the objection against Bernardini, which would have put Giacomo 3rd. Still, I'll take it.

Undisciplined betting cost me a stupid amount of money, but still a decent profit.

Glad that some people scored big in here. Did not cash one tri ticket all day. Saver win and place bets did just that--SAVED me. Caught Street Sense w/p but did not have him in the tri. I knew the sprint would fall apart and bet Friendly Island all over the place in my tri--alas not with THOR. Saved place bet for $125. I absolutely Loved Invasor and keyed him in the tri but did not have the 2--oh if Giacomo had started his run a little earlier. Can't believe they let Invasor go off as high as he did. Stupid me forgot to Win Place him and I paid dearly for it. Actually manged a small profit for the day and I love the Breeder's Cup. To me it is the greatest day every year in Horse Racing.

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 11:33 AM

Only bet 3 races yesterday, stabbing at 2 and sending it in on one. Didn't cash a thing...

Bet Rob Roy to win in the Mile and played some pick-3's. He ran up on the heels of the eventual winner Miesque's Approval nearing the backstretch and dropped back when he checked. It was the distance he lost by.

Sent it in on Asi Siempre to win with exactas with Asi first and second (for less) with Round Pond, Balletto, and Pine Island (RIP! ) and tris with those and Hollywood Story and Lemons Forever added for third. Round Pond was a Saturday throw in. There was an interview in the local Philly paper on Saturday with Matz and it explained some of the problems Round Pond had. It was enough for me to toss Round Pond in the mix. I'm still numb over that race. Even after Round Pond gets the lead with a furlong to go, Asi would have run her down in 5 strides had she ever been clear. The final insult was the obvious foul. I walked to the windows at Freehold to make my final play (boxed the three Euros in the exacta and tri in the Turf) and walked back to my car without knowing the results of the objection. I knew she'd come down. It isn't often that I go into a race with the thought that it's going to take 1:50 for me to make 5 figures. It isn't often that I think a double-digit price is a stickout in a race. That's how confident I was in Asi. It's a humbling game.

Congratulations to the winners yesterday.

had a good day but it was topped by being able to hang with ski & duds...always the finest company....

had $5wps on miesque in the mile + $20 show on badge

$10 wps on round pond

$20 show on better talk now

$40 win invasor + $80 show on premium tap

I also played my first ever p3 and was alive going into the turf with better talk now...damn near wet myself...I may have found a new wager...in the classic had they moved premium tap to 2nd I woulda had another $40 to place + I have p-tap backwheeled in the exacta...

a nice day....

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 1:06 PM

A profitable day. Early pick 3s down the tubes when Street Sense made a mockery of the Juvy, Circular Quay's "Arazi-like" move on the turn falling a little short (place sarcasm here.)

Had the triple in the FM Turf; I know Ouija Board is the best, but my Honey Ryder got shuffled to the back and had to come flying wide off the turn, still was outfinishing them all; a more typical mid pack trip and she could have won that race. Watch the replay I'm tellin' ya.....

Sprint and Mile....I was like Ray Charles with an Etch-a-sketch....clueless (Sorry Ray, love your music.)

Distaff...really didn't care after the breakdown.

Turf...liked and used Red Rocks, but Peslier rode Go Deputy waaaaay too close to the strong pace....uh, Ollie, he's a stout finisher, you know, like the kind you ride every other friggin' day of the year.....@sshat. Not bitter, though. (Note to self: Graham Motion is a very good trainer. Discuss.)

Classic....hit the triple, and for that I must thank someone here, can't remember if it was Forego or Turffan, who had been touting Premium Tap for weeks. Loved Invasor, had a small win bet as well. 126 in/893 out, very nice. So now it's just five weeks 'til Tampa Bay Downs opens (seriously), gotta find those trainer stats......

Re: How did everyone do?

Overall it was a great day. Tough to swallow having 5 of 8 winners covered on pick-3 tickets, but not being able to string them together (Dreaming of Anna, Thor's Echo and Red Rocks were the wrenches). Oh, if only the races were run in a different order. But we've all been there before. I can't complain - the win tickets on Street, Miesque's, Pond and Invasor, although relatively small wagers, were nice. Also got a few exactas and one taxable trifecta in the Distaff. I had the thrill of a lifetime just being alive for pick 3's with two double-digit horses already home on the first two legs. That alone was worth the trip to Churchill. Can you believe that a couple players took down that pick-6? That's a nice ticket. Glad to see that a lot of the gang on this forum had a good day. Hope to keep feeding off the posts in the future - and thanks to Frank (gooch) for letting me know about the forum!

Re: How did everyone do?

November 5 2006, 8:45 PM

I know the Forum members who made it to Churchill did well. I hit the exacta in the Distaff and the Mile. I had never been objected into a payout before. I had win money on Miesque's Approval and Invasor. I only got on Invasor, because I looked up at the tote board and saw him at 9-1. I thought that was an amazing price for such a horse and put some money down on his nose.

All in all I made about a grand which is easily my best day ever, and that pales beside the day Bold Bidder had. Reg had hit the early Pick 4 and was half way to the second along with a bunch of other hits when I saw him and Paris Bob at the track. I got to attend with Mrs. Edge and my brother and sister and we all had a blast. Mrs. Edge won about $150 (she liked betting across the board on the 1 horses) which was a huge, huge day for someone who a $2 ATB bet is going a little wild.

I took some pictures which I will talk to Dell about posting. Mostly pictures of some horses leading up to the first two races. I think I have a good one of Street Sense which will be a fun one to have if he continues to do well.

Ooops, I almost forgot. I want to thank everyone who posted this past week. Your knowledge which dwarfs mine, was invaluable and helping me make my plays. I definitely owe my success to the wisdom I obtained here.

I hate it when they make me wait!!!!!

November 5 2006, 8:55 PM

First off, my thoughts and prayers go out to Pine Island and those who loved her!

The tardy break by top pick Circular Quay ended up costing me the early pick 4 as he was the only one missed the way I schemed the gimmick up.

Got it all back and then some when my top 3 published selections in the Classic came in 2,1,3 for what I thought was a very generous trifecta payout at $695.00! Those who had my write-up might sense that I pretty much "willed" Premium Tap to be 3rd best and honestly I couldn't imagine him seriously challenging my top 2. Grappling with the math, I knew I could bet the trifecta 5 times or take a shot with a 4th hole wheel in the super. Went 3,11/3,11/2/"all" and it effectively gave me the trifecta 6+ times for the price of 5. All in all, a nice BC day profit-wise and it gives me some "fuel" heading into Cleveland next Saturday for the NTRA qualifier event at Thistledown.

Those of my reader colony who still had money left got "out" in the Classic! I DO wish they wouldn't make us wait so long to catch a big one though! It's much more fun signing my name after the Sprint or the Mile and playing the rest of the way with "house" money. I guess the old adage, the end justifies the means, applies herein. Congrats to those who had a decent day when head scratching was a common occurence.

Ever heard that kiddie song that goes...

There was a little girl
With a little curl in the middle of her forehead
When she was good, she was very good
When she was bad, she was horrid

I was when she was bad.

The future bet on Scorpion and my race day high thoughts of TH Approval is where my dough went. Never a call for either.

Re: How did everyone do?

November 6 2006, 7:56 AM

Had a decent day, but I can't help but feel it should have been better. Hit 5 of the 8 BC tri's for a buck, but only one of the big ones.

Had 5 horses live in the early pick 4. Including Friendly Island who was paying 15K and Nightmare Affair who was 7.5k.  If Thor bounces to the moon (like he should have) I had a $5ex, $1 tri and $1 super, $1 p3, $1p4, and would have had the p3 after the mile too.  Gotta think that would have been well over $100k

Decided while hanging out with Paris Bob and Reggie to take a shot at the super in the Mile.  Wanted to be able to go deep on the bottom, so I had to singel someone to win.  Changed my mind about 20 times between Miesque, and Aragorn.  Went with Aragorn....  Oops... what's 49k anyway....  Should have just played them both when I couldn't decide.

Finished 5th in the brisnet contest, and earned a spot in the finals and $100 credit.

Congrats to everyone that did well.

Lost $200, playing pic 3s and a couple of $18 Tris.

Never cashed a ticket. Never do on BC day.(Not completely true. I had the Joannesburg triple, very very lucky!)

Didn't cash anything last year and remember telling myself that I wouldn't bet the BC again. I lied.

I'm thinking next year of two different approaches. Either playing 10 $1 quick pick superfectas per race, or pulling 4 numbers out of a hat and boxing only those 4 numbers all day.

Can't do any worse than I already am.

Congrats to anyone that did well Saturday!!

In the Precisionist II pick 4 thread when advising to spread 4 deep in the first two legs I said "The Mile and Distaff seem the most contentious of the 4 races." Above, Ski said "Red Rocks and Invasor were my top picks." Ski, we should have put our heads together here. Got a thrill for awhile when I heeded my Precisionist observation and used 5 in both the Mile and Distaff including Miesque's Approval and Round Pond. Unfortunately, the back half of my ticket had Go Deputy and English Channel in the Turf and Bernardini in the Classic. If I had Ski's thoughts on those two races, that monster p4 was mine. Never really gave much consideration to Red Rocks. Certainly could have used Invasor. In fact, that's my style in that type of race.

Aside from that, was alive to 6 in the opening p3 and got the cheapest one. A tough break seeing as how I didn't win anything that I had going frward either. Was alive to 4 in the p3 ending in the sprint including the runner up, but didn't have Thor's Echo. Overall, took a pretty decent bath, especially when you consider that I had Street Sense, Miesque's Approval and Round Pond on my multi-race tickets. Really needed either Wait A While or TMB to win, or preferably both. Or, alternatively, had Hollendorfer's horse won the 2d, I probably would have had a very nice day, catching the opening p3 three times.

Did cash a nice H2H Bordonaro v. Henny Hughes, but even that success was tempered by a losing H2H on David Junior v. G. Washington.

Had a great time at Churchill...it was great hanging out with Reggie and elk, and meeting Morgan Edge as well...

Finally had a profitable BC Day...didn't do so well with the Exceller bets as we were chasing tris and supers and P3's...but I finally decided to just bet 2 or 3 different horses to win in each race--a much better strategy for me. Hit Street Sense, Miesque's Approval and Invasor...while my "other" horse in each race--which would've been my exacta horse--finshed last, 2nd to last and 8th. It's hard enough to pick a winner, let alone who's going to come in 2nd...and when the odds are like they are, the "make your own entry" approach is one I will use again next year at Monmouth.

First off, it was great to meet Paris Bob for the first time. It was also a pleasure to see Elk and Morgan Edge once again, the enjoyment was only enhanced by the winning days everyone was having. I had by far my best day of the year. With the speed playing so well in the first two races I singled Dreaming of Anna in the early pic 4 which allowed me to use damn near everyone in the Sprint, which is the only way I had Thor. Other highlights included win punches on Street Sense (my boy did my proud , Miesque's Approval, and Round Pond. Due to the early success in the card I got a little loose with my money, but got caught lightening twice by hitting the Mile tri with a 5 horse box. Sweetest victories were Street Sense and Round Pond, it makes you feel good when things turn out how you 'cap it. Mrs BB had a helluva day as well catching two exactas and the late double. It was her first ever attempt at a daily double and I was absolutely thrilled with her success. Most importantly because she had a good time that means similar racing trips get to keep happening for the forseeable future
