$1 tri vs. dime super?

My typical BC tri ticket is a abc/abcdef/abcdef or 3x6x6 for $60.   The dime super playing abc/abcdef/abcdef/ALL is $6 x (# entries -3) which comes out about the same.   Anyone have opinions on the better way to go or considering the same?

Not sure how valid it is since having the super could play a lot different with the dime available, but  I pulled some data from the last 3 years.

The possibility of no full tickets hitting and the pool being split by only a few dimes could really skew the results.  Also the number of people playing the all in the last leg could tend to normalize the super regardless of the odds of the 4 th place finisher.

2004-2006

Avg. $1 Tri = $1078.44

Avg. Dime Super = $1177.21 (based on 1/20th of $2 payout from charts)

10 of the 24 supers paid better to the dime super, and 14 to the $1 tri.

10 dime supers that out paid $1 tri

Avg odd of 4 th place = 32.51-1

Avg field size 12.9

Avg. amount over tri = 48.6%

14 $1 tri’s that out paid dime supers

Avg odd of 4 th place = 9.42-1

Avg field size 11.9

Avg. amount over tri = 26.9%

Maybe I'm overlooking something, but why pay-in 10 times more if the payouts are roughly equal?

Granted, we'll be dealing w/ real dime supers this year, and the greater action is sure to depress the payouts somewhat. Still seems like a smarter bet.

Vagrant,

For a 13 horse field the $1 3/6/6 Tri is $60 and the dime 3/6/6/all super is also $60.  Both cost the same and win or lose together but don't pay the same.  Just trying to make sure I'm not missing something (free money) if I stick with the tri's this year.

Elk, personally, I think pushing the ALL button in the last leg of the supers is throwing money away. With your experience, you should be able to find a way to toss a few horses from every race. It won't work always, of course, but it should work more often than not.

My strategy right now is to play 20-cent supers (twice your 10-cent payoff!), but use 4x5x6x7. If I'm correct, this 10-cent bet only costs $25.60, so playing a 20-cent super will cost me $51.20 per race. I'll be putting this strategy into effect during Friday's three BC races. If I lose all three, I may be changing my strategy come Saturday!

Whatever works best for you.

timmye, if using the same horses plus add-ons in each subsequent leg, I come up with 320 combos for your scheme so $32.00.

Larry, I'm new to these supers, but I used the format noted in the early DRF. If I play 4x5x6x7, does it not work like I'm paying off on 4x4x4x4? I was under the impression you subtract one horse in second leg (5-4=1), two in third leg (6-2=4) and three in fourth leg (7-3=4). No?

How are you coming up with it?

$1 tri vs dime super?

You are too quick. Just redid the math while in the shower and was about to delete my hasty correction. Your math looks good to me after a cup of coffee. Sorry to create confusion. Another angle that can work with this play is when you truly like a 4 horse tribox. In a 14 horse field the same $24.00 gets you a $1.00 tri payoff or a dime super by hitting the "all" in the 4th leg. Of course I would always spend an additional $2.40 in case your top 4 actually make up the super so that you would have it twice for a dime. Lots of ways to go with this gimick.

C'mon, Larry. You know my tri bet is always a $1 tri part wheel, keying one horse to hit the board in any of three positions with four horses left to make up the remaining two positions!

This may become my strategy Saturday if I take a donut on my supers on Friday!

I know timmye and I like your strategy too. My point is that there are a lot of ways to go with wagering strategies. BTW, more coffee, more corrections. My dime super play described above would be $26.40 which is close enough to being akin to the $24.00 for a tribox. Anyways, I've got to get to work.

Agree with your logic of having many many ways of playing these races. Now tell me which one will work on Saturday! Have fun at work, Larry.

I guess I'll make an appearance today...

Elk, I've actually become a fan recently of the dime supers, I plan to include them in my wagers. The payouts with a price in the 3 or 4 hole are waaay overlaid, even for the dime. Also, quite a bit more tax friendly, and we all know you're giving the IRS fits as it is.
