1:11.20? All I can say is something completely unoriginal......"they better have their running shoes on!"
It must be pointed out that the crack Distaff sprinter Dearest Trickski shared the bullet with Zenyatta at Hollywood this morning in the exact same 1:11.20. But Zenyatta?
I made it down to San Diego once this past summer, and of course I had to find my way to Del Mar for a few races. It was the day of the Clement Hirsch. My buddy and I put in a sizable pick-4 ticket, thinking we might be able to beat Zenyatta. We kicked things off with a $30 winner, and then we got the next race too. We were feeling pretty good. And then the horses came onto the track for the Hirsch, and I saw Zenyatta for the first time in person, and I blurted out, "Holy s%$#. What were we thinking?"
That's how impressive of a specimen she is.
I've been lucky enough to see a lot of the great SoCal race mares over the years -- Bayakoa, your namesake, Hollywood Wildcat -- and I put Zenyatta in league with them without batting an eye. She's an absolute phenom.
I've actually only seen Zenyatta race live twice, the first being her stakes debut in the El Encino back in January, and the second being her most recent in the Lady's Secret a couple of weeks ago.
The post parade in that one was almost scary! She came out from the tunnel onto the track, and she was breathing FIRE! Her neck was so bowed that she was looking directly down onto the track, and she would throw her front legs out so stiff and straight.......this was not a horse that was just bouncing along on her toes. I've never seen body language like that, and I admit that I was a little concerned, just because it was so unfamiliar.
The other thing that was so stunning was her coat and its color! The sun was shining brightly that day, and I saw highlights in Zenyatta's color that I honestly have never seen before. She's registered as a db or b, but when the sun hits her, you see these little slivers of gold and bronze......a db or b isn't supposed to look like that. There's no way any picture or video of her is going to pick that up. It was breathtaking!
Zenyatta is definitely a horse you have to see to truly appreciate what you're up against. Everybody appreciates what she's done and knows how formidable she is, but until you actually see her in the flesh, you have no idea!
