Imo, one of the more noteworthy quotes of recent days came from Aidan O'brien.

On an every day, bread & butter level I'm a proponent of prep races and losing by design in order to provide as much of an edge as possible. Can this work for The Breeders' Cup? I'm wondering whether multiple connections are employing the prep and go model.

I thought this was pretty candid. Courtesy of bloodhorse.com...
On Duke of Marmalade's seventh-place effort in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I):

“For a horse like Duke, we were kind of preparing him for a run on the dirt or the Polytrack as a prep for the Classic rather than preparing him for the Arc as if the Arc was the end of the road. His Arc run was a grand run, but he was kind of having that run in between on the way to here.”

I'm interested to know if anyone has doped out some others who you speculate were being prepped for the cup & not trying to win the prep(s). If so were their conditioners able to articulate that to the press?
