Response to Re: are we bound by technique

I have always felt that technique training was a really good way to teach and train, along with the basic drills and physcial conditioning that is needed to be able to fight for a few minutes at least!!!

I am against the extreme pain that some instructors put on their students but some is necessary to understand the effect, that you go through to overcome the pain and still be able to fight or think without the pain being the overriding equalizer that it can easily be.

Having a knowledge (first hand) of the locations of certain punch's that most cannot recover from, or stops them for some time while you get away or deliver a hold or submit to stop it totally (without the pummling that some groups do). I think that is what Brian relates in his discussion about the various locations that he talks a lot about. Many are totally unaware of them until much later in their learning if ever...

Once past the stage where you are only parroting your instructor and you take on a simple term of "spontaneous response/action" (mentioned in the Encyclopedia of Kenpo as the "Spontaneous Stage") is the ideal situation for sure.

Some learn faster than others, some take a lot of time, and some seem to fail and drop out of the program, for one reason or another. Why it is so important to find the right instructor...IMHO.
