Local Cable Internet Provider?September 22 2008 at 11:03 PM No score for this post | JJ (no login) |
| I'm so sick of dial up and DSL still isn't available in my area (north Vinemont near Hurrican Creek Park). I heard that AOL Time Warner sold to someone else. I don't know who to contact anymore.
If I call AOL's 1800 number about cable internet they say that it's available in my area. Then after I'm on the phone with them for 15 minutes and give them all my info they say that theres a note that says that it's not available in my area after all. They say I should call the local office. I call the one in the Cullman phone book and it connects me to the 1800 number.
Anyone know a local number for the local cable company that offers high speed cable internet?

cyber broadband isn't a cable provider - but is an internet provider.

uses radio technology.
go read about it - www.cyberbroadband.net

Their service is intermittent at best. Goes down with out warning and stays down for days. The slightest rainstorm blocks the signal. Probably good service if you're right next to one of their towers, though. |

We live just south of Hurricane Creek and have Time Warner internet cable. We have had no problems out of it. We just went to their website to find out all the info. |

i think you're confusing cyber with satellite. their service only goes down when a tower gets struck by lightning and blows everything up on the tower...happened maybe 3 times in 4 years

Not knocking cyberbroadband, but I do know several people with it that say it does go in and out. They also say that it can slow to a crawl during peak hours, not as slow as dialup but more than you would expect. Still, if your choice would be between it or satellite, Go with cyberbroadband. |

Been using cyberbroadband for several years and yes, there are a few problems occasionally but I am quite satisfied with the service. If I have a problem, I call them. They either come out and fix it or talk me through the problem. Also, they've replaced my antenna a couple of times due to lightening - no charge. Nobody is perfect but cyberbroadband sure tries to be. |

How about them lowering their prices they are way too expensive for the average home user. I would never pay their price for broadband. I would do Wildblue first. |

We apologize, but due to overwhelming demand, we are not currently performing installations in your area. We hope to resume in the coming months. Please register and we will inform you as soon as installations resume in your area.
obviously you wouldn't be doing wildblue.

We got Wildblue a couple of years ago and it was terrible until about 6 months ago. Our original installer was some computer company in Vinemont and he was totally incompetent. The day he installed our system he showed up right at dark. He spent maybe 20 minutes hanging that stupid dish on the eve of the house. He stated that night it was just a temporary install and he would be back in a few days to install it right. He never came back and my internet would work once in a while at very slow speeds.
I called him a hundred times and he wouldn't answer the phone when he saw who was calling. I called Wildblue many times and they said they would get him back out to complete the installation. They never did get him out. I used someone elses phone one day and he answered it and said he didn't remember me but he would come out for 95.00 and redo the job. I told him what he had originally said and he denied it.
I got my sister-in-law to send her son from Atlanta who works for the Wildblue in Georgia and he mounted the dish on a pole in the ground. He charged me nothing and I haven't had any trouble since then. These people around here who are having trouble with their systems is because these jacklegged incompetent installers don't care how long it works after they leave. They're interested in one thing and that is the check you give them when they do the install. Once they get that they are done with you.
No company in the world has ever been cussed as bad as I cussed Wildblue for two years and the whole time it was because our local expert is a complete dud that needs to be picking butterbeans for some local farmer rather than attempting to install a satellite internet connection. I think Wildblue needs to hire people with an IQ a little higher than a tomato as this guy from Vinemont must have. Maybe Wildblue got smart and fired him.
My advice if you get Wildblue, Hughesnet, or Starband is be sure you pay extra and have them mount the dish on a pole in the ground with cement around it. It will not work for long if they mount it on the roof or the eves of the house. Also steer clear of the computer company in Vinemont because that guy is totally incompetent and a shyster to boot. |

I had a lot of anger that I wanted to get off my chest and I sure feel better. I hope I didn't bore you too bad but I just wanted people to know what the scoop was on WildBlue. It ain't the company it's the installers. |

I had a repair shop work on my computer there and he was very competent and responsive. I would hate to see that guy branded as the culprit.
What was the name of the firm that you refer to as "some computer shop in Vinemont"? |

The place that repaired your computer is probably not the same place that installed my satellite service because I think I ask him if he worked on computers and he said no. I don't remember his name or I would tell you since it was 2 years ago.It was a mistake on my part to call him "a computer company in Vinemont" because I think he actually was just an installer for Dish network and Wildblue. I apologize for not making that clear and calling him a computer company. |

I have not heard anything good about "Wild Blue". I have had to use Hughes Net and would rather have cable but it is not available where I am. |

This is Wildblues speed today using Speakeasy. Mine hasn't went down since last week during one of those severe storms we had. Most days the speed is much more than I need for my type of interent use.Compared to my brother who lives in town and has dsl mine sucks but why does anyone need all that speed?

My momma always said you never know till you ask, so here goes. How do you know the speeds? I have Wildblue and am very satisfied with it most of the time. The only problem is on real cloudy days it doesn't do much.
But it's MUCH better than the dial-up crap we used to have! I see the connection speed is 100.0 Mbps. but how do I tell other speeds? I guess I don't have to say it but I'm not very computer savvy
Thanks! |

Just click on this link and then click any city you want. I usually click on Atlanta but I don't suppose it matters.Give it a minute or so and it will run the test.

That's really fast compared to mine. I wish I had cyberbroadband but there's zero signal. I am happy with my wildblue for now. I don't download or upload large files so it works for me for right now. |

I don't know about cable but I've used Wildblue satellite for about 4 months now & have been very pleased with it. The installation guy was here in 3 days after we called them-would have been here the next day but a part they ordered didn't come in-still they called & let us know about it. The only problem we've had is when it's really cloudy, it'll go down for a while but it's still a million times better than what we used for years-Bellsouth dial-up! The only reason we used Bellsouth for so long was because we had our internet service with them-now we've cancelled everything with them since that's all needed from them-we used cell phones mostly anyway, and it sure was nice to take those old bellsouth phones off the wall!
Anyway, good luck with what you can find-but I bet you'd be pleased with anything other than dial-up! |
