Hi All, very interesting info on the 'Red Maria'. Several months ago I read an article on the net to the effect that the Red Maria's were used to transport members of a notorious Chinese Gang(Green Gang) from the Shanghai Courts to the Shanghai prison, somehow the Red maria's were chained to armoured cars at the front and rear and this way the Gang members were conveyed through the Streets of the city in a four vehicle convoy transporting 50 Gang members.
Apparently earlier attempts to transport gang members to jail had always ended with the convoy being ambushed and the gangsters being released by rescuers.
One of the pictures posted shows a chap with spectacles standing by an Armoured car,I wonder if this is the lengendary deputy Comissioner Fairburn, who invented the 'defendu' Martial art after being the recipient of a severe beating from Chinese gangsters.
